loved and revered him for his life-risking work that he ...
As in all of his other books on India that are set in the early parts of the 20th century, the kindly, knowledgeable, and self-confident persona of the author, Col. Jim Corbett, 'comes through' to the reader in this book. This book is far less about the actual hunting of those man-eating tigers which were the focus of his other works but, instead, about the 'hill-people' whom he respected and cared about so much and who, in return, loved and revered him for his life-risking work that he performed on their behalf. It's also about India's old District of Kumaon, which abuts the west border of Nepal (defined by the Sarda River). The region's geography, people, their life-styles, and the flora and fauna are all covered in an easy-to-follow fashion. If you're a 'Corbett fan' because of his other exciting books on his pursuit of the man-eating tigers and leopards, this book will be a 'tame read', but it will provide you with an invaluable insight into the lives of the simple rural lives of the various ethnic groups from this region, in a time that preceded India's independence from Great Britain.in 1947.

Wonderful book
Jim Corbett's love of the people and wildlife of India is remarkable. Wonderful book. This is not a "White Hunter" type book, but a great look at India in the early 20th century.

Great read!
If you like reading about hunting large game in areas of the world you normally wouldn't travel, this is a good solution. Mr. Corbett tells you all about India & the people & animals that occupy it, with the depth of knowledge of someone who lived there, not just "safari exposure" for a short vacation. Great read!

Jim Corbett knows how to tell a good story
Some stories bring tears to your eyes, and others leave you amazed. One of the best books to be written about the poor in India.

My only regret is that Jim Corbett wrote so little! A perfect gentleman with both a love for the people among whom he lived and for the animals which he, unfortunately, had to hunt.
