A story to love or hate, but which narratively and (above all) artistically leaves its mark.
A controversial but profound story, well known to fans of Clark Kent and much loved by actor Henry Cavill.Despite the very captivating premise, Superman For Tomorrow is a so-called Love or Hate Story; either you appreciate it, or you hate it in a very strong way, with a deeply atavistic hatred for the heaviness of its confusing plot. Many readers didn't like it for Azzarello's very cryptic and introspective style and for certain parts of the plot narrated in medias res and a little too quickly. In fact, I would not recommend it to newcomers. In general, I believe that Azzarello has a particular and authorial type of narration that may not appeal to everyone; just see his run of Wonder Woman of The New 52 and his most recent Batman Damned, which, although it is an incredible work, is a very atypical and dreamlike Batman story à la Sandman or David Lynch style, and which can be viewed with a modicum of mistrust by the average reader of the Batman.I was personally very impressed by the different vision of the Man of Steel compared to the idealized perfect superman of the Silver Age and I appreciated a different, tormented and introspective Kal-El, not untouchable as one normally expects from an almost divine being. Even if I openly recognize that it is not the best story of Superman and that it certainly does not hold the comparison with, for example, the perfect and subsequent All-Star Superman of the bosses Morrison-Quietly, in my very personal opinion it deserves a chance and a reading, especially considering the mammoth work of master Jim Lee. The Korean-born artist is, literally and artistically speaking, wild with pencils. The artistic sector is of incredible quality and the tables are a feast for the eyes, also the result of Scott Williams' inks and the magnificent coloring of Alex Sinclair. Finally, this edition is, in my view, truly worthy and beautifully showcases the phenomenal artistry of the work. Perhaps a little old editorially speaking, I managed to find it almost new with my great luck and, I can assure you that it is worth it, both for collectors and for lovers of the Man of Tomorrow. Being a not so well loved story, it can be found at more reasonable prices than other Absolute editions from several years ago. I hope I was a little helpful.

An excellent read
I first read this book and I couldn't help but be intrigued. The storyline was fun to read and I loved Jim Lee's artwork. I would recommend this to any comic book fan. A must read.

This book is very odd.
This is a tough book to love. First of all it barely functions on its own--the story directly follows events in the Superman issues that preceeded it, which depicted mass "vanishings" of people from all over the world, including Lois Lane, and Superman's inability to stop that or even understand what was happening. So if you haven't read those stories, when you start reading this book it takes few chapters for you to get over the "huh??" factor. Add to that the non-linear storytelling and you get even more confused. The dialogue is troublesome. Mr. Azarello writes dialogue in an over-stylized manner that features continual word-play that is not nearly as clever as he seems to think. The characterizations are unremittingly pompous and puffed up, and overly laden with gravitas. To wit: a Catholic priest with incurable cancer! Oh the agony and the irony!! Why would God do this to His humble servant? Watch us now wrestle with the moral quandaries.Every character acts like they've got the weight of the wold on their shoulders...of course, that may be fitting in Superman's case, but when ALL the characters stagger around, brooding, moody, and trying to be profound every time they open their mouths, it gets a little much. The writing is simply heavy handed in every way. That being said, the book comes together in the last few chapters, as all the hints and suggestions and confusions work out and you start getting your questions answered. The whole point of the non-linear storytelling comes clear as you experience a big "AH-HA!" moment, which is rewarding. The finale is not that satisfying as a super-battle in and of itself, although there is a grand-scale throwdown, it isn't very inventive. (Perhaps you recall Superman VS. Batman in "Hush"?--THAT was inventive!) Rather, the emotional impact of the resolution is what makes an impression and pays back the heavy investment you've made in reading the eleven preceding chapters. The artwork, of course, it what is going to really sell this book to most readers. Mr. Lee does his usual job of drawing a lot of muscles pretty well, and creating big, bold compositions and imagining settings on a large and lavish scale. His usual faults are present, of course: everybody kind of looks the same--both their faces and their bodies. In the case of Wonder Woman, this works perfectly--she looks absolutely, jaw-droppingly amazing. In the case of Lois Lane, Lee's inability to differentiate his character-types means she's rendered as a pretty anonymous "babe", which is unfortunate. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to Superman fans only. If you aren't already strongly predisposed to like the character, and pretty familiar with the Superman lore, I don't think this is the place to start. I'd have to recommend "All-Star Superman" for that--the storytelling is a lot more clever (and the artwork is truly ART--vs. Mr. Lee's merely entertaining efforts here)...or "Superman: For All Seasons"...or "Superman: Birthright". Those are all better choices for someone looking for great stand-alone storytelling, and they would have been better choices for compilation in an Absolute Edition, as well.
