We Are Sew Powerful: How A Global Community Of Seamstresses Is Changing Zambia One Girl At A Time

It isn't hard to see that there are too many unmet needs in places like Zambia ; among the children, their mothers, the underemployed, the hungry, etc. But those with needs can with a small investment of money be trained to meet other needs of their community. It all fits together like pieces of a puzzle starting with some pretty purses to hold sanitary supplies so girls could attend school, then mothers employed to help make the supplies, then gardens to supply food for the schools, then gardeners to teach gardening...and that's not all! This book will entertain, amaze, and increase your faith.

We Are Sew Powerful illustrates a wonderful way for seamstresses to give a small gift with a huge impact to a girl they will probably never meet in a country most of us will never travel to. Sew Powerful harnesses the creativity of seamstresses all over the world to make a purse that is sent to Zambia, filled with reusable sanitary supplies, and given to a girl to help her stay in school during her period. But it is so much more!Girls in the developing world who have more education marry later, earn more income, have babies later in life, have healthier babies - so many statistics that are only words on the page until you meet the girls at the Needs Care School. I had the privilege of meeting them last summer - Agnes, Kristina, Rachel, Joy, and many more girls who want the same thing girls all over the world want - health, education, enough food and safe shelter.We Are So Powerful tells the story of people taking action to combat extreme poverty in an innovative way. Included in the book is a wonderful 7-day devotional to help the reader experience the Needs Care School in light of what God may be calling them to do there or elsewhere - maybe even not so far from home.

I found this project in 2015 looking for ways to sew for charity and had no idea how much it would change my life for the better. I made 25 purses the first year and was very excited to watch the unboxing party. What I did not realize is the way it would affect me. I cried and laughed and felt like a part of the team. In 2016 I somehow managed to triple the purses sent and with each one, I think about the girl who will receive them and how it will make a difference in their life. It is a very small part I can play to help with this mission. Reading the history of the project was a bonus and a motivation to continue supporting this project. I feel a connection to each purse and hope it makes a girls life a little better. While I do not know the staff personally or the sewers that chat on the Facebook page, I cannot help but feel a connection that I did not know was coming. Yes, one person really can make a difference! Read how Jason & Cinnamon Miles motivated seamstresses worldwide to join them in support of a wonderful woman in Zambia, Ester! Sew Powerful story is about helping people help themselves, not just giving a donation. Sew Powerful gives education and jobs to local women learning to sew school uniforms, knit sweaters and modify donated clothing to fit orphans. Cinnamon and Jason found a way to help Ester start a farm, to provide better nutrition. As a part of the support for Ester and the Needs Care School, Sew Powerful now has a Corps of seamstress helpers, motivated to change the lives of young women by sewing purses which are donated to the school. The local Sewing Guild, Atelier Angels, outfit purses with feminine hygiene products & educate the girls to stay in school during their period each month. A beautiful purse, supplies and hygiene education will keep girls in school all month, a huge advantage for a population struggling to combat the poverty and health challenges in their Lusaka community. This is a heartwarming story of hope and brightness, and you will be truly touched in your heart.

What a beautiful read! Sew Powerful is obviously a organization that cares deeply about the needs of others, but especially the poor. As I read through the stories in this book about the lives that had been touched, at times I had tears streaming down my face. You will be impacted in some way when you read this. It left me with a hunger to do more, to live more purposefully, and to seek out ways to spread the word about Sew Powerful. This little ministry is changing the world in huge ways. There is no way you can miss that God has been with them every step of the way and continues to pour out his grace in beautiful ways. I am so glad that I was able to be a part of this work by holding a purse-making event and contributing my thoughts in this book on how you can host your own event as well. It has given me a sense of ownership. A desire to do what I can to bless the girls and the people of Ngombe, but what I didn't realize is how much a people group that I have never met would bless me. This book is definitely worth your time!

I grew up in Zambia many years ago so I know how much help is needed for young girls to stay in school. What these folks are doing is inspiring. Get involved if you can - even purchasing this book helps!

Excellent book beautifully written. A must read for anyone wanting to make a difference. Buy one for a friend, a family member or a neighbour and together you can support a girl staying at school.

I love the story and the growth of this mission, which is helping girls in poverty stay in school as well as teaching the local women to help themselves and their community.
