great book
Probably my favorite book of the series, where Lucas meets Lette. All the characters are great but the kid is awesome. Now Sanford has split her off on her own series. Anyway I am wading back through the whole series again for the third or fourth time and enjoying it.

Naked Prey
Wow! Right up there with the best of the series. Murders, kidnappings, drug runs and a stolen car ring all mix together for a fantastic mystery. Lucas and Del head north to investigate a hanging, and get drawn into all the rest. Up there, he will encounter a unique and independent 12 year old girl named Letty. She mostly spends her time trapping and taking care of her alcoholic mother, even driving other drunks home. I started this series in the middle and have since gone back to the beginning. I’ve been anxious to meet up with all of the people that I’ve grown to love later in the series. In this one, we get to know the young Letty and we also meet Shrake and Jenkins. My only disappointment was that Virgil Flowers didn’t show up as well. I thought for sure since this car theft group only took Toyotas, they’d tangle with Virgil when they tried to steal his 4-Runner. Didn’t happen, though. This is an important book for fans of the series to read, but would be enjoyed by anyone who just wants a good mystery.Side-note: I was very pleased when Lucas and Del, while driving in the middle of the night through North Dakota, stopped along the side of the road to enjoy the Northern Lights. Two big manly men enjoying the beauty in nature. That’s special.

A well told story
The dialogue was so real. Between the detectives, the bad guys. Made the flow of the story great. I've read Lucas D. Novels before, and now I'm on the search again.

Dark police procedural with corpses, cars, cash, coke, and church
I read the paperback yonks ago and then reread Kindle version. This time I listened to narrator Richard Ferrone voicing Lucas Davenport & team. The storyline is complex and a bit convoluted, but I enjoyed listening to the audiobook more than I liked reading the book. Bravo, Richard Ferrone! The killer is known, so this isn’t a whodunnit but why’d-he-do-it. The horrendous murders include hangings—of a black man and his white female partner—outside a small town in northern Minnesota, waaaaay up near North Dakota and Canada. They were hanged in a hamlet outside the small town, where Lucas heads to solve the murders posthaste—to keep the press from calling it a lynching. What’re the chances of that, with civil rights advocates on the way?The setting is very rural, flat farmlands in winter, with fierce winds, snow squalls, and sub-zero temps. Earlier I was reading the book on a sunny porch . . . but felt the cold. The small town and smaller hamlet in northern Minnesota has several criminals and other suspicious characters—including a clutch of nuns, who might be smugglers and members of a car thieves gang.I really liked reading about a preteen named Letty, who “assists” Lucas and team by gossiping about the local grownups and their activities.Recommended to crime fiction fans.21/02/2022 0243°

one of the better of the Davenport series
“SPOILERS” Great storyline. Davenport keeps you engaged. Interesting characters and I really like how the story takes place in frigid Minnesota winter. Davenport after countless murder investigations why do you still leave your star witnesses unprotected?

A Fast Pace Thriller
A Fast pace thriller with heart and compassion. Lucas shows his soft side which is a new twist. Lettie is introduced with the right touch. A must read.

Lucas solves it again
Murder in the North woods, but then the plot thickens. Add kidnappers, drugs and a tight little community to make a real mystery. Trying to get ahead of the killer becomes a real challenge but you will be surprised with the new character and her role. Great read.

Becoming one of my "go to" authors
I am reading the books out of order, which still seems OK, and enjoying them very much. Lucas Davenport is the lead detective, this time with his sidekick Del, and they investigate a double-murder "lynching" in a small town in northern Minnesota. As always, nothing is straight forward; things are linked; the sensible twists and turns ensue. The characters are well developed and I enjoyed reading this stand alone novel.

If John Sandford wasn't brilliant - this would have been 5*
Sadly, when reading John Sandford - particularly the Prey series you become accustomed to excellence adn I felt this one fell a little short of his usual mark. When two people are found hanging out in the wilds - a black manand a white woman - the media frenzie and shouts of 'lynching' send the politicians into a frenzy. Thats when Lucas and Del are sent in as 'troubleshooters' to sort it out. A very busy book, lots of snapshots of several characters - the majority of whom were not well filled out, even if they were involved up to their neck in everything! Inspite of this the book didn't move at the same pace as his work usually does and didn't have the same 'edge' (perhaps it's coz Lucas is getting on a bit!). the introduction of Lettie, was however, a master stroke. She's a superb character and hopefully we will hear much more about her in the future. It was worth reading - but I can't help thinking that was as much out of loyalty and character knowlege as anything else. If you haven't read John Sandforb before, start with his earlier stuff, this will not give you the full impact of his usual work.

Absolutely love these prey books. I have never been disappointed with any of the stories ,although this is a very early one the plot and the characters are so believable. I would recommend to anybody who likes a good crime thriller with humour thrown in.

Comfort reading.
I love the "Prey" series and enjoy Davenport's antics. I didn't read this book in the order it was written in, but it does explain how Letty came into Davenport's life. Most enjoyable.
