Q: hwhat do you adjust to keep it from overfilling?

The float, which rises and falls with the level of the pool, has a long plastic stem which can be twisted, by hand, clockwise or counter CW to adjust the level.

Q: Will this work on an above ground pool?

Depends on the width of the lip of your above-ground pool. It isn't designed for above-grounds but, could potentially work with a wide space to set the weighted down base upon.

Q: I see that this is metal, can it be used in a salt water pool?

This is used on our salt water pool and has stood the test of time. Our neighbors purchased it for their salt water pool as well.

Q: Is there an extension collar?

No. Your hose is the extension on top and if you need it higher you can put it on top of a brick or mat.
