Red laser, not IR
I’m using this across my 2-car garage to prevent closing the door on my cars. It works fine and the spot size is about 1”-1.5” at 16’. The fact that it is a laser is good since aligning with IR would be impossible. The sensor can be directly connected to a relay board and the relay will close when the beam is broken. I suggest a 12v relay and 12v for the sensor and emitter. I have only begun this project but so far it’s good.

Use this to signal when to stop the car while pulling into the garage.
With a DPDT relay, red and green LED’s and some wirin, we now stop the car at exactly the same place each time we park in the garage. This may not be important to some but with our long vehicles, it is to us. They have worked flawlessly.

wireing
The one black wire is the signal wire original voltage was 10vThe two blue wires are groundThe two brown wires are VCC inI used a buck converter to knock 10v DC from the signal wire "the black wire" down to 3.3v for the ESP8266 web server. The voltage default on this laser was HIGH 10v, then after a knockdown with the buck converter I reduced it to 3.3v for the ESP8266, when you break the laser beam, the voltage goes to zero v, so I have the garage lights come on when the signal wire is "LOW" turn on the garage lights, via a relay.

Great sensor at a very good price
This came with brackets for easy install and adjustment. The beam is positive and very responsive to obstructions. This is every bit as good as sensors costing 4 times as muchI will use it again

Very difficult to maintain the proper transmitter and receiver alignment.
The receiver diameter must be bigger than 12 mm so that it may not be too difficult to maintain the alignment of the transmitter with the receiver at all times. Even at 10feet apart, a slight movement of the transmitter will cause the misalignment.
