Quirky Egg Minder Wink App Enabled Smart Egg Tray, PEGGM-WH01

Hookup and syncing was easy , but no matter how hard I try I can't get this thing to actually sense how many eggs it has in it. I took it out of the box, linked it to my Wink Hub and filled it with eggs...immediately after it says there were three eggs missing, when I had just put them in. I did all the necessary testing and found out that it wasn't a faulty sensor, or an actual hardware issue, the thing just doesn't work. It randomly shows eggs missing in different spots. After you use an egg...forget it...it's all messed up. It's a cute idea and it would have been cool and unique to see how many eggs I had in the fridge at all times, but poorly executed. Just doesn't work. The only thing it is good for is an egg holder with a nice lid.

I read a fair amount of bad reviews on this one, but for the price (less than $10), I decided if anything else, it was a pretty cool looking egg tray. Surprise, it works perfectly. YES, it may take a bit of time to 'sync' with your hub to show the updated results after the refrigerator door is open (sometimes). YES, if eggs are put in awkwardly they may not read properly, and YES, you want to keep the lens on the bottom of each slot clean for it to work reliably (after taking an egg out). But YES, it works, and has never failed. Obviously this is a novelty designed to showcase how cool IoT devices are, therefore it should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, haven't found a flaw in over three months, and it's built beautifully. As a result, I'd recommend it.

Let's just start with don't buy this! Others have posted that they haven't had any problems, but many more have. First, this product should have a safety warning. As part of the pairing process, it turns your phone into a strobe light, and that is how it communicates on initial setup to connect to WiFi. I thought this was strange at first, because I've never see any other product do it. I now realize why I've never seen a system like that used; it does not work. Any other WiFi device without a user interface, creates its own temporary network for pairing. Why couldn't have Quirky followed suit. Being unique isn't always good, as demonstrated by the egg minder. I cannot comment on how the device works after pairing. From what I've seen in other reviews, not good. Now lets talk about the packaging. When this arrive, it looked like it had been shipped around the world and back before arriving at my door. The seals, the little clear stickers that let you know it's not been opened, look like they've been peeled and replaced a few times. Now my device could have had a rough ride, or it could have been a return set to another sucker. I just don't know. tl;dr: Even at $9 it's not a good deal.

Of all the solutions in search of a problem, this one takes the cake... And it was very expensive when it was first released, too. Since I already own a Wink hub (I'm extremely pleased with it, by the way) when I saw that these were being liquidated in a fire sale I thought what the hell, why not give it a try... Now I know why it's being liquidated. It doesn't work. It never accurately detected the presence or absence of eggs, so it's completely useless. And then one time someone forgot to close the lid, which caused it to drain the batteries... Probably the worst product Quirky ever came up with. It would be borderline stupid if it worked... But it doesn't. The only good thing about it is that it makes a pretty good "dumb" egg holder.

I really wanted this to work. Which it did for about a month and a half. But ever since then, I've noticed the light doesn't come on when I open the fridge, like it used to, and when I pull it up on my phone, it's not syncing. I've replaced the batteries and have done a complete reset and it might work for a day or two but over the last month, I can't get it to work at all. Now it's just a egg carton that holds 14 eggs with a fancy cover. Would like to replace but I think it was only a 30 day warranty.

I have purchased 5 of these, several as gifts and they all work well, until the batteries run down, which happens in a few days or less. I have heard the the NSA is using these to transmit tip security memos they want to leak to the Russians. But that is not verified. This device is a real conversation piece, The tray is very good quality and the whole system would work well if you have your own chickens and are routinely adding a few fresh eggs. I know several people who know people with chickens and they routinely supply a tray to the chicken people to be filled with eggs. This would be a great gift to friends like that. I wonder if re-using old cardboard egg trays over and over to get eggs from undocumented chickens might be an E-coli risk? The freshness sensor is only about the oldest items placed in the tray, in order, and it does not know the difference between a lemon/lime/egg/rock. You have to install Wink on your phone by manually keying in your home WiFi info into the install - otherwise you will think you have installed it because you got it to flash but the Wink app still won't talk to your eggs. That done, the tray does not communicate well from inside the fridge, so it needs to be taken out to the counter when you add/remove eggs. It updates quickly, perhaps every few seconds. BUT, the deal breaker is that fresh alkaline batteries run down in a few days and then your Smart Tray becomes stupid until you replace them - the batteries that is. The real nice people at Quirky are very good and walked me through the installation.

This thing is awesome. It gets a lot of negative reviews, but not because it's a bad product, but because people on the internet are jerks. I bet more than half of the negative reviews are from people who never even bough the Egg Minder. Setup is super simple and works. Actually, the whole system just works, which is refreshing. My only gripe about the product design is the cover for the battery holder, which screws on. That seems like an odd choice to me, but maybe it has to do with being in a moist environment like a refrigerator. I'm not the sort of person who eats eggs every day. I am also the sort of person who has better things to do with their lives than memorize how many eggs I have at home. I never really know when I can fit grocery shopping into my schedule, so the Egg Minder is very useful. Maybe these people who think it's stupid have nothing else to do with their lives but sit at home and count eggs before going grocery shopping. I don't. I have a life. When I go to the grocery store, my iPhone knows I'm there, and it pops up a little alert. I slide the icon and immediately I know how many eggs there are at home and if I need to buy more. Perfect. Simple. The only complaint I have is with the customer service. It doesn't exist anymore. I e-mailed to ask how to find out the MAC address of the Egg Minder because my wifi network uses MAC filtering as part of its security regimen. I received an e-mail back saying the company has been bought by another company and there would be no more support and nobody can answer my questions for legal reasons. Seriously? If it wasn't for the terrible customer service experience, I would have given this five stars.

Loved the concept for this item -- what's not to love about an egg minder that sends alerts when eggs are low (or when the battery is!) and tells you when your eggs have that 'not-so-fresh' feeling. I thought I would like the extra two egg slots, but between that and the high profile of the cover, it takes up WAY too much room. I can now only store 14 eggs where I used to be able to store 24. When I refilled the item with new eggs, they were detected. But now, they aren't even acknowledged in the app. The low battery alert didn't fire, but I replaced the batteries anyway. Still no dice, er, egg. Now I have two eggs that are marked as not good, with another 8 that are an unknown. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app didn't help. It doesn't sense egg freshness, to be clear, just calculates a number of weeks (that you choose) from the date they were loaded into the slots, so though I could just wipe everything out and start over, who knows how long I should give the unknowns, because it's going to start calculating from today! Wish I could return it, but I initially thought it would grow on me. I hate to just throw it out, too, but not only is it not keeping me informed, it's taking up excess space in my fridge. (Which, BTW, is a restaurant quality behemoth, so there's a lot of space, and yet...this thing takes up a bunch! I have it diagonally on the shelf, because it would hang over the edge, or get pushed clear to the back where I can't reach it. Also, the eggs are quite loose in their spots -- the original carton the eggs came in is more comforting, because they're not just waggling about every time I move the thing. Makes me nervous that one will break when I pull the thing out, or if a kid pushes a juice box in next to it too firmly, as kids are wont to do. I really wanted to love this thing (most of our home is "smart" -- doors, cams, lights, etc.) and add to our collection of quirky devices, but I will probably just trash the thing and try to forget what I spent on it. *sigh*

This has improved my life no end, at any time I can check how many eggs i have and how long I've had them which has alleviated my OCD massively having been diagnosed with an egg complex in my teenage years. I have set up a diary reminder to check my eggs hourly and feel a great sense of relief and calm apart from when there's a uneven number of eggs which is wrong on many levels leading me to go and buy more eggs but smashing one on the way home to maintain the required even number. I only wish that Quriky could now launch a butter minder to help with my butter complex, get designing guys.
