what's the best way to store the divider, fully closed or fully wide open?

I store mine closed as it takes up less space in the utility box. However, that being said. fully open unloads the spring tension which may allow longer spring life. comes down to personal choice.

Has anyone used this on leather? I have an 8" Osborne divider that works well, but I could use a shorter one.

It can be used on any material. The legs are not pointed. They are rounded over (thus the name "Flat Leg Divider" ) It is better for measuring than it would be for marking.

What is the maximum diameter ball can this measure?

6 and 5/16 inch jaw capacity says what it means.

Minimum open space that can measure?

Mine will measure from 0 up to 6 1/2 inches. It locks in place wherever you want it and closes under tension so you can fine tune it? I am happy with the quality…. Hope that helps!
