The Garden of the Gods

Funny, charming , beautifully written
The books in this trilogy are the most beautifully written books I've ever read in my 60 years of reading for pleasure. I re-read them from time to time just for the pure joy of it.

An absolutely delightful book
The mother who grew up in India, lived for a few years in England and being a widow she moved her family to the island of Corfu. It is the youngest son, Gerald Durrell, who writes the book. For him this was like living in a paradise and the book is filled with all his various escapades on which he collects all sorts of critters. But all the characters in this book are so different, starting with his siblings, his oldest brother who tries to write novels, the somewhat younger brother who loves any kind of weapons, his sister etc. Because some of the kids took the liberty to invite their foreign "friends" some situations are truly funny and then there are all the characters of the island itself. This was one of the books when I felt sad that I had finished it.

Endearingly funny ...
This is the finish to the trilogy of books Durrell wrote about growing up on Corfu. I love all three books for their combination of family memoir and natural history. Durrell writes well and these books are very funny so beware of reading them on public transportation! These books delighted me as a middle-school aged kid when I read them before and they are just as delightful now as I aspire to adulthood. Some day I will at least visit Corfu, but my true fantasy is to find a strawberry pink villa there in which to retire in splendor.

The Trilogy Finishes Strong
This book concludes the Corfu Trilogy, and I was sorry to see it end. I enjoyed my time on the island with Gerry, his family, their friends and neighbors, and Gerry’s beloved animals. The animals are a focus, but it is the human characters that are so amusing. Again, much of what happens in this book overlaps chronologically with the events of the first book, but it is new material. The characters are colorful, quirky, sometimes eccentric, and always believable. They are treated with affection even as the most absurd things are happening. As I read the trilogy, I often thought that none of this would have happened in today’s world where television, video games, and our cell phones consume so much of our time. Bottom line: Loved the Corfu Trilogy and I highly recommend it.

Let's save the animals.
I had been enjoying the Durrells in Corfu on P B S. The book is equally as good. Loved all the characters that interact with the family. Gerald has a writing style that flows while the language is a bit strange at times. Many words that I had to define stated no meaning. All of the family members are heart warming, with mother winning my heart. What an adventurous women to have up rooted her family to such a exotic place. The adventures of them all had me laughing out loud. I loved learning about the work Mr. DURRELL has done for animal conservation. I look forward to visiting the place that bears this name.

Love, love, love this book!
I grew up watching Gerald Durrell on TV and reading his amazing books. The Corfu Trilogy, of which The Garden of the Gods is the final chapter, is a true delight. Endearing, charming, fascinating, occasionally tragic, sometimes dramatic and often laugh out loud hilarious, this book is one of the most entertaining works I've read in years. The best screen writer in the world couldn't make this stuff up!

Delightful
A fun, light read. The descriptions of the village characters and the visit of the King of Greece were hilarious.

The Garden of the Gods: A fairly good book.
This book did not measure up to the first two of the series. Some parts were funny but the detail of the activities of insects and turtles was boring for me but might be interesting for a preteen or a teenager. The prose is very good but some of the names of the guests were unpronounceable. There is some humorous parts but not enough. I thought that there would be some of the scenes that are in the TV series in the book but I was disappointed.

growing up as a naturalist in Corfu in the 1930s
The third in Gerald Durrell's Corfu trilogy as a boy free in the countryside and seaside of Corfu before World War II. The writing is not quite as light and exuberant as in the earlier two books but still a delight to read. Few people will have enjoyed such an apparently carefree childhood or such influential mentors but we can at least read wistfully.

A timeless read
I've yet to read the third book in the Corfu Triology but having immensely enjoyed book 1, My Family and Other Animals, and being a third of the way through book 2, Birds, Beasts and Relatives, I'm sure it will be equally enjoyable. The Corfu Triology is a joy to read, particularly in these difficult, Covid-19 hit times, and has a lot of laugh out loud sections. Mr. Durrell was an exceptionally talented writer but don't take my word for it, read these books and find this out for yourselves. Enjoy!

Life on Corfu through the eye of Gerry Durrell
Last book of the Corfu Trilogy and I was quite sad that there wouldn't be anymore to read about this wonderful Durrell family living their lives on Corfu. As the other books it had me laughing out loud and I could actually imagine being amongst them during one of their stupendous parties. Brilliant reading material for all ages and highly recommended this book to everyone
