excellent book
reading this book was like going into a time travel machine, it transported me back to the late 1960s. i left school & went into the majestic cotton mill in waterhead just outside oldham. my mum & my sister already worked their. i was a cone winder like my mum, my sister was a cheese winder. i loved my job, i left when i had my son & then went back on the evening shift. i remember one lady who actually wore massacra & used to have to pick the cotton fluff off her lashes. i moved to shaw & then worked at the lilac cotton mill & the lily cotton mill. the women where very friendly. i was even asked to be miss courtaulds, but i was far to shy to do that. thank you to ron freethy for reminding me of those happy times long past.

A good insight into the industry that was!
This is an easy read and informative insight into the industry drawing on the memories of people who worked in the mills. Some detail on the raw product, the inventions that brought about the factory system , and how business was done - along with the workers response to wage fluctuation. A well balanced account overall. A good introduction to the industry from its inception to it demise.

Interesting with lots of photos.
Bought this whilst researching family history, contains photos, lots of information from people's memories. Particularly helpful is the index of 'cotton terminology'. If you are interested in this period of Northern life I recommend it. It covers the cotton industry even including 'Wakes weeks' and is written in an easy to read style.

New data
After reading this booklet, I felt better informed through the eyes of the workers. While the volume cannot provide the odours nor the definite sounds of a mill, the reminiscence memories supply the personal aspects of commonality within the ranks.
