Madman Volume 1
L**E
This is not an average comic
Madman, hmmmm how do even explain it to someone... an amnesiac who may or may NOT have superpowers but is certainly crazy trying to revive a scientist in his freezer...so he can figure out who he is but ends up in a...well... I won't spoil anything - just think...like Deadpool meets Freakazoid...in Riverdale (archie comics not the emo thing on the WB) Or kinda like what would happen if you cast Dennis the Menace with a severe PCP addiction as the Punisher... I dunno, but its one of my all time favorites, nothing like it. Not for everyone though, I guess just not a Marvel kind of title... but a complex story, solid dialogue and iconic artwork... its a good one.

From the Beginning
Mike Allred's sereis "Madman" is a bizarre pop culture cocktail. Madman pulls influence from superhero comics, B-grade science fiction films from the 50's and 60's and metaphysical philosophy. What you'll find is something delightfully off-the-wall. The main character is Frank Einstein, a sort of modern Frankenstein's monster with few memories of his previous life. His state as a reanimated human makes him a bit insecure, so he wears the costume of his favorite childhood hero, and pursues the meaning of his existence in this form. In his adventures, he runs across mad scientists, gangsters, mutating clones, government agents, aliens and cosmic beings. If you have read the series, but not from the start, you'll see where some of the characters come from. The first few stories were a bit more horrific than I expected. You'll see Frank rip a man's eye out and eat it, and you'll see a mutated clone decapitate himself on a broken aquarium, so if you have a sensitive nature, you may want to avoid this first volume. Another thing that you might want to know is that about the first 100 pages are in black and white with a slight blue tone. By the end of the book, though, you'll see the brilliant color work that Madman is known for.

Golly Great
Michael Allred is one of my favorite names in comics and he never disappoints. Whether he be illustrating a team-up book, an X-book or even writing his own series; his style is both charming and evident. "Madman" is a forgotten gem that gleams a top the typical drudgery of 90's comics and still feels fresh and relevant. Allred's illustrations literally pop out of the page, even in black and white (Madman #1-3) they are a pleasure are a pleasure to look at. Allred starts his very own super hero universe in the most elegant way possible, following the adventures of an amnesiac. The series is very quick witted and imaginative and is something that I would prefer to read over many of the bland comics that exist in the modern industry. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something different in comics, anyone who values creators being involved with their own work or just something that doesn't take itself to seriously. Overall, it is a great read for comic enthusiasts or those who enjoy seeing what one creative mind is capable of.

A reasonable compromise?
This comic is amazing. I'm in love with Madman. This is edition is just a little disappointing when compared to the original volumes (of which I luckily own one) or the misleading over expensive anniversary monster which would have justified the size and price...if they were the original stories! So sadly this is the only way to discover this gem of a character and for as much as it is a solid copy, I still wish there was something better. The condition of the copy was great and delivery was on point.

Madman is fantastic!
Nothing much to say here than what others have said. Madman is a fantastic book by a fun and inventive creator. Great stuff all around!

Early Allred is Still Pretty Good!
So quirky! I love Mike Allred. This early material isn’t my favorite of his work as it’s a little hard to follow but certainly worth the read. It’s gets better as you progress. Certainly worth 4 stars!

Sets up a great character that I expect gets into wackier plot lines ...
Clearly an influential book. Sets up a great character that I expect gets into wackier plot lines in the future.

For completionists
It's a good volume if you're already a fan of Madman. IF you're just starting, I'd get vol. 2 first (which is the main run of the comic and is tighter writing/art).
