The First Men in the Moon (Classics Illustrated)

Absolutely unreadable
This version of the book is littered with errors. Wrong words, bad spellings. It's like the publisher OCR'd the book and uploaded it to Amazon without giving a passing thought to proofreading. Sadly, it was more than seven days between purchasing this and actually attempting to read it, so I can't return. Save yourself the money and download it from Project Gutenberg instead. It's free, as this book is old enough to be public domain, and is actually readable.

An interesting read
Before we reached the moon in the 1960’s there was vast speculation and science fiction based on what we might find. The logic behind this story is straight-forward and compelling. It represents what makes science fiction great.

Somewhat Disappointing
The book starts out great, plenty of action and suspense. Unfortunately, the end of the book is rather dull and boring. I seemed to lose interest at the end, it didn't hold my attention.

My thoughts
Inhabitants in the moon is an incredible story line and I found it hard to put down. It was great food for thought.

The First Men in the Moon
It has been a while since I have read anything by H.G. Wells. So it was past time I revisited his work. This is a wonderful story featuring a mad scientist who discovers a substance that is opaque to gravity, as told from the point of view of a failed businessman. The novel pre-dates Einstein's theory of General Relativity, which removes the concept firmly out of science fiction and into the realm of fantasy.Wells creates a fully-functional world on the Moon with an alien biology that has adapted to the conditions of the Moon. It is masterful world building. We only see a small fraction of the Selenites' civilisation during the body of the main story. Wells appends several chapters to the end of the story to tell us more about them. They are unnecessary for the narrative of the story and seem like flab at the end but we do get to appreciate the time and effort he put into creating his aliens.

Great Retro Science Fiction Reading
This was a book that I had always meant to read but never got around to doing. Therefore, after 40 years, I decided to take this off of my 'things to do' list. I think I made a correct choice because I do not think I would have appreciated it as much as I do now. I do not think it is as good as War of the Worlds, The Time Machine or The Invisible Man. However, I think these three mentioned novels are exceptional. The First Men in the Moon was very good. However, if H.G. Wells had only ever written this novel, I think it would stand in the pulp sci-fi sections like Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Ervin Howard or Michael Moorcock. What I am trying to say is that the other novels put H.G. Wells in a classical writing frame. Whereas this marvellous novel seems to be more like good old pulp sci-fi. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it. The Last Days of Thunder Child: Victorian Britain in chaos! The Last Days of Thunder Child: Victorian Britain in chaos!

My main reason for buying and reading the H. ...
My main reason for buying and reading the H. G. Wells classic, The First Men in the Moon, is that I wondered if the novel would trigger something in my adolescent memory because I first read it then. I recalled reading about a scientific object called a 'sphere' and, sure enough, my memory had not failed me. I suppose his readership then really appreciated his work, but now, of course, the twenty-first century has revealed far more technical and impressive exploits that chart man in space. So, then, it was purely a sentimental motive that kept me reading until the end of the book. It is an entertaining read on a simple level, but I don't think it measures up to much on a more sophisticated level. More than that the author possesses a literary style that leaves something to be desired, I guess, in the opinions of many avid readers.

My version was unreadable
I have just started trying to read the Kindle version that I had downloaded. After attempting the first two or three pages, I gave up. It looks as though it has been translated (really badly) from a non-English version of the book. This makes it almost impossible to make any sense of it. Unfortunately, I downloaded it at least a month ago and can find nowhere on the Amazon website to complain and request a refund.

Science fiction at its best!
Such a good read! Everything is described in detail by our author, who uses every bit of his imagination that will keep you on tenterhooks right through the book, until the closing pages.
