Excellent Learning Knife
I bought this knife for my daughter last year when she turned 3. She loves to help out in the kitchen, and this allowed her to take another step toward helping with meal prep as well as cutting her own food at the table. In the kitchen she chops vegetables for soups and other dishes. Carrots and potatoes are her favorites to cut. She has even managed to cut very thin carrot slices with it. She's never had any kind of injury from this knife. The blade is made such that it would be pretty difficult to cut skin, but I wondered if it would slip off of a carrot and cause a blunt injury of some kind. Hasn't happened. She's able to cut all kinds of raw and cooked vegetables, as well as cooked meats, though this takes a little more effort and does not produce a clean cut. The knife has held up well over the last year's worth of washings in the dishwasher and still looks like new. It seems very well made and my daughter loves it. I highly recommend this for children who are ready to start learning knife skills.

Nephews loves them
Gave this to our nephews for Christmas (they are 3, 4, and 6 years old), and the six-year-old told us the next day that he had already used it "all the time." :) Funny, since it had only been one day. When we see him again in a couple of weeks, we'll ask him if he still likes it. The knives are super-cute and perfectly kid-sized, and I'm not aware of any problems... I'll check in with their parents on that. They are Swiss-designed, and having spent a month in Germany last year, I tend to have confidence in designs that come from that part of the world. :) So four stars for now, until I check in with the family again.March 2012 Update: Five stars now, since I asked the six-year-old in February how he liked his "little dog knife," and if he uses it. He says he still loves and uses it all the time. I asked how his four-year-old brother's knife is holding up, and he said "good, but he pulled the tail off." So they still love their knives, and they've held up well, though the rubbery tail can apparently be pulled off. That's too bad because they're so cute with their flexible little tails.

Blades neither blunt nor sharp
The quality of these is fine, and my kid finds them really appealing, and I'm pretty sure they're safe in the sense that she's unlikely to hack off a finger -- but as nervous as I was about it, I found that the kitchen wisdom that a blunt knife is a dangerous knife still holds true even with my kid. You know your kid best and obviously if yours seems like they might wave the knife around, yes, go for something like this. But I got hives watching how much pressure mine had to use to cut cucumbers and wound up giving her a real knife and standing RIGHT next to her. With a proper sharp knife it just slid through the veggies really easily with very little force and she maintained control over the path of the cut easily. My kid is going 8, I don't think I'd give a very sharp knife to a child much younger, so these might still be a good choice for, say, a 4 year old who wants to slice apples or cheese or something.

Not too sharp
Easily held by young hands. Not too sharp so that kids can help prepare some things for meals with adult supervision.

Excellent and SAFE
I have a five year old who always wants to use our big chef's knife--but she is definitely not coordinated enough to do this safely, not least because she tries to chop as quickly as she sees her parents doing it.She is loving these knives. They're well made, sturdy, and sharp enough to cut some firmer items like potatoes (particularly with the serrated blade). We had previously purchased some of those brightly colored plastic knives that you see for kids to practice but honestly they're worthless--they can't cut through anything with more substance than a strawberry.Very happy with my purchase!

Excellent tool for children!
The handle is kid size, the design makes teaching knife skills easy (thumb on the puppy’s ear), and it’s sharp enough to cut without young vHolstein just forcing the knife through the food (dangerous habit!). We learned about these from a nonprofit children’s food program (they do tastings and let kiddos help with recipe prep) so I knew how to teach proper skills and that you should start with the serrated blade as it encourages the back and forth motion versus the flat blade. My 3 year old can use it with supervision. I set up his hand and re teach the motions before he does it by himself. This is real metal, not plastic so it has the right weight and sizing.

safe yet functional for toddlers and up
I gave this to my less than 3 year old grandson who loved it. His 5 year old brother immediately wanted one like it. The tip is blunt, and I gently pulled the knife across my hand- no pain. Obviously, children that age need to be supervised even with a "safe" knife like this. While it works well for 3 or 4 year olds, I think even older children will still enjoy using it- depending on how used they are to using these kind of things. I would expect children to have outgrown this knife by age 8. Definitely recommend as a first real dinner and helping in the kitchen knife.
