Product description 1993 movie soundtrack .com Michael Nyman came of age as a classical composer in the radical London of the late '60s. His work embraces multiple vernaculars (jazz, avant garde, conceptual art) and helped cement the foundation of what came to be known as minimalism. Decades into his career, Nyman's score to Jane Campion's film The Piano made him a star. The movie's themes of colonialism and silence (its protagonist, portrayed by Holly Hunter, cannot speak) were perfectly aligned with his longtime interests in world and ambient music. Horn players assist members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in fleshing out Nyman's stately, hymn-like motifs. On the more heavily orchestrated cues, sentimentality wins out over minimalist restraint; the best tracks feature Nyman on solo piano, playing the rudimentary, faux period repertoire of Hunter's character. --Marc Weidenbaum

I never tire of this
I was blown away when I first watched the film of the same name and heard this music back in 1993. I had to have it -- and I've been listening to it ever since, on cassette if you can believe it. It was (past) high time to own the CD. If I tell you it's haunting and beautiful and evocative and soaring, I run the risk of sounding cliched, but it's hard to describe this music without using such emotion-laden descriptors. Some of it is sweet and slower, while other parts pound and build, almost whirling in sound. This is music that happens to you, that takes you on a ride. Although I think highly of the film, I don't think you'd have to be familiar with it to appreciate the soundtrack. There is some music I just know I will listen to all my life, so long as I'm able. I count The Piano soundtrack among them.

Sounds of emotion
I saw the film, The Piano, many years ago. I loved the music very much. I listened to this album over and over. I then lost the CD a couple of years ago. I recently purchased it again. I turned it on, to have some music to relax to while I took a bubble bath. I pressed play, got in the tub, and began to listen. I had to get out of the tub and stop it from playing, otherwise my tears would cause the bathtub to overflow. In other words, this goes beyond normal relaxing piano music. The emotion it evokes is pretty raw. But when you're in the mood, it's a great album.

Simply the Best!
This is my favorite movie soundtrack of all time. Little Impulse, A Wild and Distance Shore and The Wounded highlight this extraordinary piece of music. Each song expresses the mood Ada, the lead character, is feeling since she doesn't speak. It's truly a remarkable achievement. Bravo, Michael Nyman!

HAUNTING, UNFORGETTABLE SCORE MATCHES FILM
THE PIANO is that rare soundtrack that stands on its own as great music, but also evokes images and emotions of the classic Jane Campion film it was composed for. In this way, it is one of the most profoundly successful movie scores in film history. The music is filled with longing, turmoil, sadness, and fulfillment. It fits neither pop, classical, or traditional movie standards (neither does the film); it seems to exist on its own plane, quite apart from anything else you've heard, or like a dream you've had but can't recall in detail, only in emotion. It also never feels dated and does not grow dull after repeated listenings. That is an achievement in itself

Haunting music that lives inside you...
This CD has quickly become one of my favorites. I discovered the movie quite by accident just a short time ago, even tho it has been out for over 15 years. I just never had the chance to see it then. But it has since become one of my top 10 favorite movies. The soundtrack is just one of the reasons this movie continues to be a favorite of many. Beautiful music that seems to live inside you....

The Piano Movie Soundtrack
The album is filled with beautiful compositions from the movie. But in preparing the album, possibly in deference to time constraints, many tracks are simply chopped at the end. There seems to be little effort to bring down the volume to a subtle ending as on many soundtrack recordings.

The piano soundtrack
The film by Jane Campion, "The Piano," is so touching. Finding the soundtrack was great as it's probably one of the most heart wrenching but talented soundtracks I've ever heard. It makes seeing the movie unbelievably real and horrific, that a man could treat a woman so badly, making her believe she'd have to love him and no one else. Thanks, Amazon!!

The Piano - Michael Nyman
