Why Lhasa de Sela Matters (Music Matters)

Wonderful Music, Beautiful Woman, Music will live on
This is a perfect book on the life of an extraordinary artist who was taken away from us at 37 year old. He music is like no other. Her stories are like many. Only Three albums that resonate through the music world in many ways. Music of the Soul, the spirit and life. One of my favorite books now though I just bought it not long ago. I found her music on a Putumayo Mexico CD, the second time I found one of my favorite artists on such a CD. Would never have believed where one song we lead me. God bless Lhasa De Sela. She really matters!

She sang with her soul
Magnificent biography on an American, French, Mexican and Canadian singer. She was as intense as Janis Joplin in the interpretation of her songs. She sang with her soul.

Wonderful, thoughtful biography
More than 10 years after de Sela's passing, it was wonderful to read her life story. I loved learning about her childhood and all of the experiences that made her who she was. Of course the story gets sad, but it's written about with such grace and I appreciated reading the experiences from her friends who were around her at that time. A must read for Lhasa de Sela fans.

Once SOULED, you'll be SOLD.
Lhasa De Sela's music has largely gone unnoticed in the U.S., but .apparently, did not escape the ears of accomplished author Goodman. Better yet, he clearly cared enough to investigate the history of this mercurial and deeply talented artist, and his passionate journey into her world has yielded a tale which to this reader unwound like a quality Netflix mini series. Few things were "routine" for Lhasa, and a complex family life within which the mystic may have both enhanced and clouded each day ,made for meaningful artistic expression which managed to draw from a wide palette of influences and sounds. I can pretty much guarantee you'll be sampling her whole catalogue as you devour the tale of her life. She did not make "run of the mill" records, and though "world music" might be close, the orbits of the planets she traveled were far ranging. This multi-lingual artist was revered in key international locales, and by many cherished notables who recognized her unique talents. There's some inspiring and also some really sad stuff to witness in this tale, including her very untimely departure.Though the book is concise, it renders the story of a passionate life lived both outside the margins and yet deeply connected to the joys and pains of humanity. She must be smiling from the heavens knowing her story was beautifully told by someone who truly "got it".

Grateful for this book
I wouldn’t have known about this book had I not seen it displayed at my local Barnes & Noble. Having been a fan of hers for over a decade, I bought it immediately, and began reading it then. What a beautifully written book, describing the fascinating upbringing that set the stage for her unique approach to music.Undoubtedly she needs to be brought to a wider audience, and this book helps the cause just fine. Perhaps her work will have a trajectory similar to Nick Drake. She was ahead of her time, and hopefully a sign of what’s to come for music: a return to sophistication and intelligence.I am grateful that this book was written.

Excellent and quick read
I gobbled this book in 2 days. It's a nice read to learn about the life of Lhasa. I'm a fan and had the privilege to see her live in Montreal but I didn't know much about her other than she had an unconventional nomadic childhood. This book puts everything in perspective. Lots of interviews with band and family members and friends.I got lost a few times though, the author gives a name (say of a band member) in passing and sometimes few names in quick succession and then refers to them few pages later when I personally have lost the context and have to rewind to see who's talking. On one occasion the person was quoted and introduced one paragraph later. But that's ok, I'm bad with names, so it's probably just me.Overall I'd recommend the book to fans and future fans too!

Read this!
I read this book before I even knew Lhasa's music. I really enjoyed it and it enhanced my appreciation of her music. I wish I knew Lhasa. Read this book curled up with a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate while playing her songs. Your soul will be filled.
