Fabulous Book
Color photos. Well-written text. Great addition to my artbook collection!

Color vibrancy lacking in some portraits.
Comparing the reproductions to those in older books shows apparent fading. Formerly vibrant blues and pinks especially have morphed into paleness, even changing to dull orange in the case of the gown of the famous Mrs Sheridan. One is left wondering as to cause: ravages of time? Overly zealous "restoration"? Poor printing? Text is quite interesting however.

A Great Artist
I was totally amazed at the extra-ordinary talent of Thomas Gainsborough. He is truly one of the all-time great artist. I appreciated the fact that his paintings were shown in color. This book also gave a thorough description of his life. I am happy I purchased this book!Dwight

WONDERFUL!.......................
Magnificent art book, if perhaps not for the specialist, but for us "dilettantes" (in the original, best sense of the word).Gainsborough is all about Portraiture-------his Landscapes are not to MY liking-------mine alone; I do not know their actual value to "conosseurs", but after having admired his majestic picture at the MET in NY of "Mrs. GRACE DALRYMPLE ELLIOT" a grand courtesan of the "ancien-regime" I "followed" his career sporadically. His picture of ladies parading at St. James Park in London is a beautiful character/historico painting that captures the moment in time magnificently---at the Frick Collection in NY.Reproductions are exquisite, and exposition is straight-on and not the jargon-laden "mumbo-jumbo" of "Intellectual" critique. Each picture offers us a bit of background and an opinion on color, line, etc.STRICTLY for those fans of painting enamored with Portraiture. Titian or Rembrandt or, God help us----let us not be cruel to the man, Velazquez----- he decidedly was NOT, but although flattering to the subject---after all, most of these, I believe were commissions, he manages to offer us more than a bit of TRUTH "hidden" among the glamour and hauteur.Uplifting and JOYFUL------but don't look for POVERTY here..................

To remember past emotions...
This catalogue contains beautiful reproductions of all the drawings and paintings from the last great Gainsborough's exhibition. It helps to remember the emotions I've felt in front of the true works. Every notice is sensitive and informative. And all texts are from eminent specialists. I just regret that bibliography doesn't refer to the old great Paris exhibition.
