UPDATE 5 YEARS LATER: I am compelled to come back to a review I wrote almost five years ago to provide an update. The money we spent on these umbrellas (we bought two) is some of the best money we have ever spent. We LIVE ON THE BEACH, I mean, I am looking at the sand as I type this. We use these all the time and they have held up wonderfully. All parts still work, no rips or tears, and the only evidence of age is that the steel hooks the grommets attach to show some rust, but that is my fault. Some of the best engineering I have ever seen in terms of getting a product right.ORIGINAL REVIEW: A really well designed product on multiple dimensions. First, the umbrella itself is terrific. It is big enough to fully cover two adults in folding chairs. The square tubular ribs should make bent umbrellas a thing of the past. The fabric is sturdy and seems to be well put together--more like marine canvas than typical umbrella fabric.The jewel of the system is the base. This design is simply ingenious. The triangular base holds the umbrella upright in two different ways and is really easy to set up. First, the mounded up sand is equivalent to digging in the pole another 15" or so, only you don't have to dig, pound, or twist. Just scoop in some readily available sand (if you're at the beach, that is). Second, the grommets on the fabric base work like guy lines holding the pole in place. The sand pushes the base out and holds it and the sides anchored to the pole create tension against each other. The pole does work in our older screw anchor but the fabric base is so easy to use we quit using the anchor.This is heavier than any other kit I've used but not horrible. It is definitely pricy but I really expect this to last a long time, probably a very long time.

We have 16 to 18 on our vacation trips to the beach. We started with a gift of one from our children We then added two more, then another, and this year we added our 5th system. I call it our beach porch when we get it set upThe product is tremendous on the beach. It is easy to setup and take down. It is total sun protection for those choosing to stay in the shade. They have endured some significant wind on the beach. I believe we help sell a few on the beach that year.They are easy to pack, carry, and the bag is great for transport. One feature that can be overlooked is the sand hog. It makes it so easy to get the proper size hole for your shade.We are very happy with our systems. They were well worth the investment and I expect they will last for many years.

I never ever write reviews.... yeah yeah yeah, you've heard it before. It is true though. I couldn't help it, I was so pleased with this purchase that I had to, so here it goes:Very easy to set up and take down, unbelievably sturdy in high winds on the east coast during hurricane Ernesto's approach. Beautifully made, and stitched, the entire system is made of high quality parts and materials. Even the bag is well designed and sturdy. The umbrella spars were very thick and the hat and towel hooks were so strong that they held a full backpack cooler at one point during the day, drinks and all.Other nearby umbrellas were collapsing, blowing away, flipping inside out, or forcing people to take them down for the day. Not the BUB. It stood perfectly straight and tall all day long, like a 100 year old oak tree, barely even wiggling in the wind. I was totally flabbergasted. I was sure that the strong winds would destroy any notions that I had of this thing holding up to the gusty onslaught, fully expecting disappointment. At the end of the day the umbrella was still standing, even laughing directly into the face of nature itself and all the while I was laughing at how glad I was for buying this thing before my trip.If you're looking for the perfect beach umbrella, don't bother looking at anything else, this is the one. I've spent years suffering with broken, flimsy, finicky systems that just made breezy days nothing but miserable. This is the best one I have ever used, period. No seriously, nothing comes close to this thing.I'd give it 10 stars if I could and I'll be buying several more.

Best beach umbrella we have ever owned. Easy to put up and very secure in the wind. The gopher and shovel are very sturdy and work well even in hard packed sand. This is the 3rd beach bum umbrella we have owned. Many people have stopped to ask us about our umbrella and have bought one for themselves.
