Knowing God Study Guide

I coordinate a bible study for a group of about 20 men. After reading J.I. Packer's Knowing God and finding every one of the 22 chapters amazingly helpful, I chose it as our group's current study. Over the years we have used many study guides, most of which seem to be "stand alone books" which study group members tend to focus on to the exclusion of reading the actual book. Sounds odd, but busy men find shortcuts. The end result is that a portion of participants in a study group who only work through the accompanying study guide miss significant insights that are only found in the basic book. This study guide is different. Packer's book is 22 chapters. Packer's study guide is 22 single pages of questions...one page for each chapter. This "forces" participants to actually read the book. As a result, discussions of the important concepts Packer presents is much better covered in discussion. Our group is exceptionally positive and enthusiastic about this study and a large part of the reason is the directness of the study guide. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Packer's book - Knowing God - may be a classic but it is not profound. I believe what it is, is an answer in part to those authentic Christians who have found their lives embroiled and perplexed in the sufferings of Christ. Packer does make several good points in his book that every "true" Christian should be aware of (before sending your money off to some TV evangelist), but while Packer appears to admonish the doctrine of some Christian groups as practiced by many "status quo" or "celebrity churches", his book is more a review of "correct" doctrine than a profound revelation of knowing God face to face as Moses did. And so I regard this book as more of a compact Bible study regarding Packer's view of strictly correct doctrine with a handful of pages that truly "tell it like it is". I believe this book is a good study for the new Christian that truly desires to know God more but ironically Packer, although drawing a strong distinction between knowing God and knowing about God, dedicates most of his book to knowing about doctrine. The new Christian should understand that knowing God is something that happens between you and God, not as a result of necessarily reading this book or practicing strictly correct doctrine.

This gave me so many tips and practice ideas on how to better understand my Bible. It is invaluable! I wish I had it years ago. There is a workbook with the same title and authors which works very well with everything taught in this book, I highly suggest getting it, too.

In order for us to understand the book of the bible I feel it is impairitive to know as much as we can about the writer if that book. Although we can never know as much as we would like to about God, in this book J.I. Packer helps to stimulate our discussion about Him. His sometimes controversial way of approaching the different attributes of God helped me to want to study the bible more and discover for myself who this great God is and what He is like. It worked really well in our small group setting for our Sunday school class. Loved it!!

J.I. Packer has the unique ability to convey deep theological sentiments to any person both believer and non-believer. This study guide assists you in reviewing the text to grab the main points, but also give you opportunities to engage in critical thinking on the text, your own life, and what this newfound knowledge means to you.

I like the information in the book it causes me to think and to read through the chapter to find the answers to the questions instead of just giving me all of the answers at the beginning or the end of the chapters.

I have always loved Packer’s book and our small group decided to use it for study and discussion. So, I bought the study guide hoping that it would provide some additional guidance and points of discussion. However, this study guide is incredibly short! Just one page of discussion questions per chapter. Plus, this guide is almost as expensive as buying the book itself. The study questions are good, but the guide itself, in my opinion, is over-priced.

Great study book. I bought 2 copies of "Knowing God" with study guide so that my wife and I may study together. The start has been a great eye opener. Every Christian should read this. For those seeking to know who God is this book will help.

Its only a guide book in other words it does't contain the complete book. So it is a waste of money to buy that book with a huge amount.
