Learning From Strangers: The Art and Method of Qualitative Interview Studies

Social science graduate students: READ
If you are in a sociology, anthropology, or enlightened criminology department, you will benefit from this book. The book is admittedly a bit dated but the principles are timeless. The text is organized in a way that makes the text relevant to the causal reader and the scholar who is putting chapters together for their dissertation. Lots of material in here could be quoted and placed directly in "Methods" and "Limitations" section of your own manuscripts. Can you tell that I really like this book?

Great Book for Qualitative Interviewing
This book is essential for anyone interested in qualitative interviewing. What is especially valuable is the way that Weiss helps describe the larger philosophical commitments that relate to interviewing as a type of qualitative research. If you are interested in qualitative research or interviewing, this book is essential. Its easy to read and understand.

Qualitative instruction and information for a relevant and credible research for any project.
This is a great resource for researchers. Love the clarity of information, brings alive aspects of doing qualitative research the right way. Well worth the cost to have in your library. I have and will continue to recommend and use this resource.

This is a great book! Very down to earth
This is a great book! Very down to earth, right to the point advice for students on semi-structured interviewing. The best guide to anthropological/sociological semi-structured interviewing I have found.

An engaging jewel
Weiss's book mirrors the combination of seemingly unforced flow and attention to focus that are characteristic of good qualitative interviews. I appreciated that it tackled delicate questions of ethics, editing and developing analysis in a way that bolstered the reader's confidence in their ability to develop good judgment, while never minimizing the risks. The use of excerpts of transcripts showing exactly where interviewers' decisions had affected outcomes, and of specific examples throughout, made this book a compulsive "read" -- I wish that more authoratitive publications managed its grace and energy.

Five Stars
Great easy read. I wish it was an audio book, that would be even more helpful.

textbook for my Qualitative research 2 class
This book was interesting to read. I found that I could sit and read and enjoy this book. The examples in it are specific, and although I am doing research in a field different from the examples, I find that they are interesting and thought provoking. I know that my interviewing skills are getting better from having read this book.

but the fact that the print is very poor adn hard to see on some pages
This is not a comment to the content of the book as it is well-written and informative, but to the print as it is poor and hard to read on several pages.

Good book to read, not perfect
Qualitative research is so wide and its rules so mobile that this book surely offers good hints, but cannot provide definitive answers.I surely think it's a must-read for people who are engaging in qualitative research, especially for what concerns a bit of research design and problems while interviewing. Nevertheless, the book will give hints: no answers are given, since everything depends on your very specific research.
