The novel depicts beautifully caste and custom laden high-caste malyali society. Also the place of women in a society structured thus. Though highly culture specific it is Indian to the core. Caste system, though slightly loosened, still plagues Indian society malyali or non malyali. Women, by and large, still do not enjoy equal status and are subjected to gross injustices. They are too many to be listed.The writer has crafted all charecters with great skill. They are so real you feel them breathing down your neck. Their joys their sorrows their struggle for survival are all so real. They become a part of the life of the reader. At least I felt so. Pathos lingered for quite a few days. The protagonist is not an isolated case. Lots of women are quiet sufferers like herTranslation is superb. One doesn't feel it is translation and not original. Actually it is the success of the translator that the novel reaches out to the non malyali reader and let's them enjoy this beautiful work to the hilt. In fact it is not possible to write fully about the quality of this splendid work of Mr Nair. His awards are well deserved.

MT is a legend. And that is clear in his debut novel.
