WiFi connectivity to iPad2 and running with Raspberry Pi and Linux using guvcview!
The ipad with Wifi and software microscope app gave me an image right away, but took a couple of tries to get rid of the green images it was producing at first. It took me a while to get the microscope to work with my Raspberry Pi and Linux via USB. One of the must haves for me was the ability to be able to use the microscope with my Raspberry Pi computers and Linux. Many digital microscopes do not work with Linux. The suggested programs did not work on the Pi. One of them just continually crashed. I finally found and had to use the program guvcview, which is very nice and has lots of options for processing the images. It took multiple connects to get it to work via USB, but it finally did, and now works the first time every time I connect via USB.The adjustable top LED lights are very good, but there is no lighting from below, making Fresnel reflections a problem from shiny surfaces, they need to be tilted a few degrees to avoid the Fresnel reflection off the sufrace back into the CCD. It is not set up for microscope slides and lighting from underneath, that would be a real improvement, but add extra cost. The new adjustable side LED lighting base should be a big improvement to eliminate the front surface Fresnel reflection effects into the CCD.Another problem is that the LED has a large 405nm component, which makes biological things have some green fluorescence that you do not see under natural light, giving slighly false green coloration for those situations. (see shot of fingernail, there was no green present in natural light).Despite the criticisms above, this little microscope is a fantastic bargain for the price, and I have recommended it to others to buy ASAP!! I researched low cost digital microscopes for the last 2 years on and off and waited all that time for this microscope. It was by far the best deal for the lost cost ones that are under $150. All of them except this one are unsuitable because of stability, fine focus problems, or lighting problems that are solved in this Jiusion microscope! You will not find a better value for the price, and the image quality is sufficient for most intended purposes. The improved design metal stand/base makes the adjustment of focus and zoom very stable when finely tuning the image, a big problem on most other low cost digital microscopes. The WiFi, battery powered feature is fantastic, making the microscope usable in the field with an ipad or iphone. I did not try the Android software, so can not comment on that. The photos I uploaded for reference are a penny at low magnification, then showing the highest magnification on the word LIBERTY. The blueish photos are from a standard blue paper face mask, you are looking at the shallow impressions in the mask at lower and higher magnifications. These are fairly hard to image, especially the eilliptical ones, since they do not have very much contrast. The second to last 2 images are of a thumb that has a slight infection near the edge of the thumbnail. These photos show the kind of images you get. The last shot is of a plastic mm scale ruler, to give an idea of the magnification and resolution. Unfortunately this image was not at maximum magnification, and I could not find the image I took of the ruler with max. magnifcation. I am not sure about the exact magnification or how they obtained the specification of 1000X. I need to take a better image and process it in Mathematica to get the resolution and magnification. Once can also take a shot of a printed resolution chart to compare. Estimating from a zoomed in blow up of the picture, I would say that one can resolve 10 micron features without too much trouble. One last suggestion to the manufacturer would be to use a higher resolution ccd imager in future models, and also work on increasing the magnification. Obviously such improvements would add to the cost, but higher resolution ccd's with WiFi microsprocessors are getting pretty cheap now. I would be willing to pay an increased price for those two improvements. Also, I would like to know how to connect WiFi on a Raspberry Pi (Linux) computer and take images directly with the Pi via WiFi.

Nice replacement to my earlier USB microscope
Tricky to set up and use initially. Also doesn't connect if you let batteries discharge although it looks as if it is working. Odd that instructions say you have to ignore error messages during set up, but be brave. Worth it in the end.

Practically Perfect
I added the earlier version of this product, the 4x1000, to my Christmas list on Amazon. My daughter took the bait and I was delighted to receive the product. I was very impressed with the quality of construction and enjoyed using it to inspect a wide variety of tiny objects. My only disappointments were the teeny tiny manual and the not too rigid stand. I contacted the seller and he was very helpful in sending me a link to a full-size manual online. While I was looking for a new stand I ran across this newer 5x1000 version with a very nice stand and a lot of new features and I ordered it immediately. The new stand, with its rack and pinion adjustment, is as solid as you could ask for, and yet it is small enough to allow you to break it down and put in the case with the camera and tools for field work. I found that by loosening the lock screw on the column you can swing the camera to the side for photographing small objects on a larger item. The microscope itself is a tremendous improvement! The Wi-Fi makes it very easy to use with my Android tablet, or desktop. The camera and light controls are well-placed and easy to use. The zoom control works very well, but it is a little stiff and may turn the camera in the mount if you're not careful. You may want to consider putting a rubber pad opposite the two thumb screws in the circle to avoid this. The light has a broad range and is very easy to control. I have tried the AmCap and Xploview software as mentioned in the manual. So far, I prefer Xploview for the ease of use and settings for video, still photo, and stop-motion settings. You can even use the Windows 10 camera if that suits you better. One trick I have learned is to set the stop motion to 20 shots per minute when you are photographing an unsteady object, then pick the best one or two and delete the others.Overall, this is a great product with good support at a very reasonable price. Go for it.

Works, But Pic Quality and Zoom is Poor
First: The construction quality is decent.Second: Setup is easy with a cellphone. App works well, but when connecting to a PC via USB, you lose the ability to zoom in (digitally) by pressing the +/- buttons. This was on a Win10 PC.Third: Highest optical Zoom I was able to get was around 30x to 50x (with a clear pic). I actually measured a lower-case letter on the display, and compared it to the actual letter's height on the paper that I was magnifying. If you zoom beyond that (optically and/or digitally), the camera gets so close to the base that the object gets obscured by a circular shadow from the LED's. This even happened outdoors with the LED's on or off.Fourth: Picture quality is okay (similar to a pic taken directly with a cellphone)!! At higher zoom settings, the picture quality gets soft and focusing becomes more of a hair trigger (you move the focus ring like 1 degree back and forth and you lose the focus).I found if I take a pic with my cellphone then pinch-zoom in on it, I get a sharper pic of the object than this microscope. If this worked to the claimed 1000x, then, judging from what I see at 30-50x magnification, the pic quality would fall apart and be useless. Yes, theoretically, I assume you can achieve higher zooms, but at the cost of getting a very dark picture (obscured LED lights) and a picture so soft and out of focus that it would be useless.I really wanted to like this unit (at the time of purchase, it had one of the highest rating of all the units I compared it to). Sorry, but I have to return this, and will save my money and wait and buy a unit with higher (real) magnification.
