Very Happy. Was worried about size.
This ended up being a good choice and I'm quite happy. The price is great for what I got- the 4 gallon version with microban. Crazy good deal. The issue (and why I took the time to write this) with these is I found it really hard to tell what bowl size you need for your dog. In regards to the drinking bowl area- not the tank. I have a large/medium size dog about 75 pounds. He's medium/large with an Xlarge massive bulldozer for a head and only slobbers when he drinks. The slobber thankfully ends up in the bowl, but requires me to clean it very often- as you should. Better than the floor thankfully. Previously I had a high rated electric fountain but that ended up being a bigger hassle than it was worth. So I needed a large drinking area to accommodate his big dome head and the tank was a good way to be able to dump the slobber water and have it refill as well as if something crazy happened and we live in a hot area in summer he would have water for quite awhile until someone could come check on him. So I went with a big one. Little did I know how large the tank would be. It's freaking huge. He might drink this much water in a month. Maybe. His little dog best friend could fit in it comfortably. It's so much water I could fill it and feel like I've got water for myself for earthquake preparation. But I fill it 1/4 of the way usually. A sparkletts drinking water tank is 5 gallons, and I should have thought of that in regards to size. The microban is great- I wipe it down about every 2 weeks and there has been no mold or otherwise on the bowl which before was an issue with other bowls. The tank has a nice feature that wasn't clear when I purchased: the microban I thought was how the plastic was made with an anti microbial which it seems that's the case but it also refers to a filter attached to the bottom of the tank where it flows into the bowl. So not only does this stop the slobber and food bits from getting into the fresh water tank, it makes it easy to dump the dirty bowl water out, spray it with the kitchen faucet and let it refill so it helps keep everything clean. This is a bit of a chore only because it's heavy when filled due to size. But totally worth it. The tank has also shown no mold growth. Would recommend if you don't mind a large drinking bowl with a large tank in your place.

A Real Lifesaver
I am absolutely in love with this waterer. I have two large dogs (a 70-lb Boxer and a 60-lb Greyhound) and they used to drink so much water I could barely keep up with it. It seemed as soon as I turned around from refilling both of their 2-quart bowls, they would have drunk all the water again and I'd be right back where I started. I was refilling their bowls probably 4-6 times per day, depending on how hot and humid the weather was (and they are both indoor dogs!) This 4-gallon jug, however, has solved that problem completely. As long as I make sure to fill the bowl itself before placing the water-filled jug in it (not because it falls over, but because otherwise it will drain about 1/4 of the water inside just to fill the bowl and cut down on how long it lasts) then I only have to refill the jug about once every 4 days. The bowl itself is also very deep, which is good because any debris (food, grass, etc.) that might be in the dogs' mouths when they drink will sink to the bottom and not wind up back in their mouths later, and once it's time to refill the jug it's very easy to rinse out the bowl too. One thing I wouldn't really pay much mind to is the filter included with this product. I have never really cared that my dogs drink tap water (after all, they drink from puddles on the sidewalk too if I don't pay attention and steer them away, so I don't think they mind.) The filter also tends to leak a little bit of charcoal dust each time the jug empties more water through it, which leads to a small amount of grey-black residue sitting in the bowl which will need to be washed out. This is fine, though - the product works just fine, if not slightly better, without the filter. Overall, this is an absolutely wonderful product, and I would recommend it for any pet owner who has multiple dogs or just finds that they are refilling the water bowl much too often. NOTE: I know some reviewers have mentioned algae growing along the insides of the jug in only a day or two. I have been using it for a month now - without the filter, I might add - and have never done any more serious cleaning than swishing water around in it, and I do not have one speck of algae, mold, etc. growing inside. I have to assume that these people's water might already have had algae present in it, or that they are leaving the bowl outside where these things might be able to get inside and grow. If you are using this indoors, you should have absolutely no worries about this.

VERY PLEASED WITH THIS VERY WELL-MADE, STURDY PET WATER BOWL
The last water bowl with attached gravity jug we got from a big box store was made with flimsy plastic on both the jug and the bowl - it was difficult to pick up and handle with an almost useless snap-lock system which resulted in the jug popping off. The PETMATE not only has none of of these problems but has some great features in addition. This PETMATE gravity jug and bowl is made from very sturdy plastic and has a great twist-lock mechanism. We use it on the deck for our wildlife friends and it holds enough water for about 2 weeks. It includes a filter, which does double duty keeping critter debris from moving up into the jug. Our raccoons like washing their hands BEFORE eating and then bits of food drop off of them with their parting drink. We got the 2.5 gallon version and are very pleased. And best of all, it is quality product made in the USA. Here is a trick to get more mileage out of the jug. The bowl holds a lot of water and after filling the jug, you twist the bowl onto the cap and then turn it over. A lot of water then drains from the jug to fill the bowl. We use a quart container to immediately fill the bowl after turning it over to reduce the initial draining of the jug.

Great price*Decent item*Poorly packaged
Great price*Decent item*Poorly packaged I feed several outdoor kitties outside my home and have hated refilling the bowls each morning. I decided to try this gravity waterer along with the matching feeder. I previously purchased larger ones from a different company for a much steeper price and love it. I wanted the same feel for less money and went with these. For the price, you really do get a great deal. It serves the purpose I needed for sure. Packaging: This item, along with the feeder, were tossed in a large box, way too big for what these were. There was hardly any protection and the items got tossed about. One even came detached from it's base. Thankfully nothing broke but it was poorly packaged nonetheless. Item: I purchased the smaller sized waterer since I have minimal space outside. Setting this up with the feeder fit perfectly. The colors on the bases were nice and the plastic seemed sturdy enough. The price is great and does what you will need it to do. The opening of the base is a decent enough size that the outdoor cats have used it and its low enough that smaller animals can probably eat from it as well if you have another type of pet at home. Cons: Only have 2 minor complaints really. 1- I know a lot of other reviewers like the slow way the water comes out,but I didn't. Maybe I'm too impatient, but it was like pulling teeth. Mine happen to still make the gulping sound like the larger models and literally took about 10min to fill maybe half way on the smallest waterer. I could image how long it takes on the bigger models. I'm not sure if that's how slow this is meant to come out, but I personally prefer it to just come out and get it over with. 2- Although I knew what I was buying with this one, I do like the models that have a smart stop built in so you can turn the jug over into the base without water going everywhere. It makes like a lot easier and you can actually find one of those for not much more money, maybe 10$ more and you never have to worry about leaking or flipping. Bottom Line: Worth it. Great price and does what you need with minimal effort.

Pictorial Review & First Impressions
Note: The lone product picture on this page (as of 4/28/2015) doesn't match the packaging on the Replendish I received. The paperboard on mine contains helpful information I would've liked to know prior to purchase, so I've added several pictures to this review to help other shoppers. Here are answers to two common questions I noticed in the product page Q&A, and wondered myself before receiving the Replendish: yes, the unit is BPA-free; and, yes, it comes with one filter. ____________________________________ First impressions: We have three cats, though I purchased the Petmate Replendish 1/2 Gallon Waterer specifically for two of them: they happen to be water connoisseurs. Their preference is drinking from faucets, and no unattended glass of water has been safe in this house for the eight years that we've had them (sisters from the same litter). After rinsing the pieces of the unit this morning and filling it from the connoisseurs' favorite faucet (judging by their preference, we ought to bottle the water from our guest bathroom's faucet and sell it at Acqua Panna prices), they immediately took to the Replendish without the scrutiny with which they typically regard new things. Our third cat, however, who daily goes into what we affectionately refer to as "stealth mode," crouching low and nervously gliding across the floor each time she notices anything is out of place in a room, regards it with her typical level of suspicion--but after about an hour, she drank from it several times. The Pieces: Altogether, the Replendish unit consists of five pieces: the base, the clear reservoir, a black cap that acts as filter housing at the mouth of the reservoir, a filter, and a plastic strap that secures the filter inside of the cap. The plastic strap is a bit of a pain to snap into place over the filter; it took me three attempts, even though I have small hands and wear my nails short. The mouth of the reservoir is threaded, so that the filter housing cap screws on to it. Then, the entire assembly of the reservoir twists about a quarter turn into the base, locking it in place. Observations: First, I'm very pleased that, with the filter in place, the water flows slowly from the reservoir into the bowl; the result is that it isn't noisy. We bought Drinkwell Platinum Fountains at two different points over the years, and the cats never got used to the loud (and sudden) gurgling and bubbling that occurred each time the equilibrium shifted enough for the reservoir to dispense water. When I first put the Replendish down, our connoisseurs began drinking without any regard for the fact the reservoir was actively dispensing and quietly gurgling. Next, one reviewer had mentioned the 1/2 gallon size didn't work for them, as the opening of the bowl was too small and too near the reservoir, so that their cat didn't like it due to its ears and whiskers being crowded. I nearly purchased the 1 gallon model as a result of that review, because our cats won’t eat out of small bowls that crowd their whiskers. However, being a starving college student, I opted for the less expensive 1/2 gallon, and the cats don't mind it. The only trouble with this size is that only one cat can drink at a time. Another reviewer indicated no instructions came with the unit, and so it took trial and error to figure out that the filter needs to be removed from its plastic wrap, and secured by a plastic strap included with the unit. As I noted above, the paperboard that came with my unit is different than the product picture, so perhaps it didn’t previously come with instructions, already assembled, and clearly labeled. However, mine arrived with instructions; the pieces were already assembled, so that by disassembling them it was impossible not to see how to reassemble them after removing the plastic from the filter and rinsing the pieces. Further, the filter housing and strap are clearly labeled as to their function. Bottom line: assembly and disassembly are simple and fool-proof. Many reviewers (and those that provide answers within the product Q&A section) seem to omit the filter. I don’t know how useful the filter is for actual filtration, since, unlike in a powered fountain, the water from the bowl--which tends to accumulate fur and crumbs of food--isn’t being continuously circulated through the filter. However, I will continue to purchase filters for the simple reason that using one causes the water to dispense slowly and quietly from the reservoir. Overall, our cats are happy with the Replendish thus far, so I’m happy with it, too. Though the opening of the reservoir (see pictures) is small enough that a bottle cleaner is required, the base doesn’t have any awkward or tight spots to clean, like Drinkwell Platinums, which are full of nooks and crannies. I’ll revisit this review in one month with an update as to whether the cats and I continue to love it. In the meantime, feel free to post comments on this review should you have questions! _________________________________ 5/29/15 Update: I still consider this a five-star product for what it is: a waterer. The cats still like it, and drink more from it than they would a bowl of water replenished as frequently. However, this is not a be-all and end-all product for me, because it requires more cleaning than a bowl (since the Replendish has more parts) or a fountain (since the Replendish doesn't circulate). I recommend this product to anyone who prefers a waterer, but will continue my search for fountains, as I do prefer something that circulates and filters the water supply.

Best choice if you need a large water tank, but it's slippery, heavy, and clumsy
I bought the 4 gallon waterer for my elderly friend, who has 2 dogs and 3 cats. She doesn't remember to fill their water dish, and I don't have time to go there every day and do it for her. I chose this model because it's easy to clean after you take it apart. As other reviewers have said, it's a major chore to fill, because 4 gallons of water is over 30 lb. The water container is *very* slippery when wet, and there's no handle to grab it by. And there's no way to shut off the water flow, so you have to get the water container into/out of the base quickly. I recommend that you put this waterer on a water-safe surface like concrete, or else buy a silicone mat to catch the inevitable spills. Having said all this, I still think this waterer was the best choice and I would buy it again. The best fill technique I've found is to set the water container on the floor, right next to the base, upside down, and pour in water from gallon jugs. Then I put on rubber gloves, get down on my knees, grab the water container and flip it onto the base. Once it's on the base, rotate it until it locks.

Works well but major flaw
So I love the fact there is a filter and you can easily clean our the bowl. The size is great for 3 small pups. Putting it together is easy and it functions as is should. What I don't like is the ring that supports the bottle is open along the bottom. What that means is the water that gets splashed around creates the perfect place for mold to develop. Every week i scratch my hand trying to slide it up and around that lip and come back with mold and other gunk. Food particles that were on the girls faces, dirt whatever all gets splashed up there and it's not safe. That is a massive design flaw. If that was a solid ring instead of a 90 degree angle with sharp edges, then I would love this waterer. I can't imagine how hard the smaller bottles are As is, it is not worth the money and it makes the quality is bad.

HUGE. Fresh water for weeks. Don't want to pay so much extra for better color.
I WANTED this in peacock blue but DIDN'T want to pay an additional $11 extra dollars for what? ?Color? Nah. (Even though it WOULD match our blue litter box) So silver gray it is. This is SUPER huge. I mean four gallons, it would have to be, right? l thought Amazon had overpackaged when the huge box arrived. Nope. It all seems sturdy. No cheap plastic. It IS super easy to assemble and clean when refilling. Other reviewers cited the 'filter strap' being difficult. I have pain and numbness in both hands, no nails to manipulate with and it wasn't difficult. ...And I maybe don't change the filter from the first one. I did not have any unpredictable spills - Not that I didn't spill... The bottom (gray) piece is actually two pieces, and they were not quite clicked together....Water splashed through an opening I wasn't aware of, between pieces, at first. And, like with my dog's last gravity waterer, I filled the bowl before I "flip and plant" the filled bottle into the bowl. This prolonged time between needing to fill the waterer again. Also I found this prevented "losing" a lot of water to the bowl that l just spent time putting into the bottle. THAT might be the best method with this product! I have read reviews citing "gushing" water when bottles are planted into empty bowls....so maybe at least put some water in the bowl. Plus with this product....that bowl holds a lot of water, like, a LARGE storage quantity itself without the bottle. the 'big gulp' of water dishes. The bottle then needs to turn to click/lock into dish. Had to learn that. Or the bottle is slightly...off. Not a problem with water flow. But that instinct of: "is that.. off?" Indeed it is my friend. I think there is a definite learning curve to using such a large waterer successfully. But my family is SUPER phobic of water spills (after our fridge water ruined our entire kitchen. Then that plumber left a bathtub running, ruining our bathroom as well) Basically we have PTSD if we see water spills or hear water running. So if we can handle this sitting in our rebuilt kitchen, anyone can! I can not speak to 'freshness'. I don't drink from it. The four leggeds don't mind. The reason we BOUGHT this is we adopted a indoor cat in addition to our dog. And it is DRY where we live. When this arrived and was unassembled, we actually put the cat INTO the gray dish(sorry no photo). Judge all you want, it was adorable.... And freakin' roomy! Anyhow. Water bowl itself holds a lot of water. Then there's the sturdy clear bottle. It all buys you a lot of time between chores, err.. piece of mind that my fur babies will have water. BUT since it holds so much you can go a LONG time without messing with it. There is a certain ick factor when (again) in our arrid climate dust, fur, or cat litter collect in the bowl. this doesn't bother the pets, just me. So I refill/clean/reset the whole thing just to clean the bowl before my beasts need more water. Yes, I have small creatures. this is more than I need for them. Better than having less than I need! And OBVIOUSLY this amount of water, four gallons, weights a lot. Frail people need not apply. Or maybe just use it as an excuse to make people visit you to fill the water bottle. I'll update if theres major change with the product. UPDATE: Product still going strong. Kitten is a cat, still fits in the gray dish. Went from waterer next to litter box to cat tree between them and waterer against wall. Less crap collects in water and cat REALLY enjoys the huge bowl. She will splay over the water like its going places. Other times she sits down dipping her paws in to lick water off her paws to drink. ..not sure if THAT is how she drinks water, or is just a game. This thing is half water dish half swimming pool. And its too sturdy for a cat or my #14 dog to tip over. Makes my cat love water. That is what l? care about.

Great, clean, easy to rinse
There's not much to say about this. It's great for my cat, and I can't imagine it being any different for small to medium dogs. I only fill it up about half way and leave it out for a week. I have a medium cat and about half is all he needs in that time. I take it apart when I need to refill, but only after rinsing each part twice first. It's very fast to do. This has not gotten dirty or moldy at all in a month. I would say my biggest issue with this is that there's some kind of "chamber" or ridge in the bowl that lines the sides where the jug connects. This can fill up and hide water, so you just need to make sure that it's being cleaned too. Just turn the blue piece upside down while rinsing and shake clean. Maybe that's why some other reviews have issues.

Amazing large dog water dispenser
This is one large water dispenser. It arrived in a huge box (Amazon Style), and first impressions was it size. The water container is very large - 9lt I think and does the job perfectly. Things to note: the water container has a screw lid, easy to fit and get off with no moving parts. When off the opening to the water container is so large you can fit your hand in making cleaning a doddle. Fill with water place it on the base unit upside down and tip the whole unit the right way up and away you go. The water reservoir has a lip around its edge stopping the water spilling out with any accidental knocks. Overall brilliant product. For information this is the 3rd water dispenser we have had for the dogs, the previous two were of another make with a very weak screw thread that has broken, not with this unit! Two dogs well pleased and hydrated.
