Arthur Hailey's The Moneychangers

An oldie and a goodie
I had read this book several times. It’s one of my favorites. I saw the listing for this mini-series while randomly surfing and my eyes lit up. I had to have it and I had to see it. I was just a little kid in 1976, so there’s no chance I would have been allowed to watch it as it originally aired, had I even been interested in the subject matter at that time. The mini-series follows the plots and subplots of the book closely. I thought the themes brought up within were mostly timeless, and indeed some are more relevant now. Bankers and corporations have gotten a lot more brazen these days. The fashions and hairstyles, alas, don’t hold up quite as well. It is, without a doubt, a snapshot of the mid-1970s.There were a few things I found changed from the book, for those who haven’t read it yet:* The FMA/Forum East bank slowdown showdown had a different ending in the book. I’m disappointed in both the way they showed it in the mini-series and that they left a lot of loose ends there.* Eastin’s story after he got out of prison was greatly simplified in several ways. Juanita’s role here was somewhat different, Eastin’s interactions at the Seven Seven Club and his moves to get closer to the core were different, and the final showdown was much different than I remember. If you’ve read and enjoyed the book, I encourage seeing this mini-series. It was certainly good to have the characters I knew and loved act out their passions. If you’ve never read the book, I recommending doing that, then coming back for this DVD. You can thank me later. :)

Arthur Hailey's the Moneychangers - A true television classic!
Many of the reviews posted here are "spot-on". This Mini-Series is my all time favorite! Paramount invited Arthur Hailey to see their adaptation and he was astounded as it was nearly exactly like his book. He told Paramount Television it was just as he envisioned it! Years later when I visited Los Angeles, I purposely went to see the twin black towers and hoped the orange rectangular sculpture was there... it was. I have waited 38 years to see this great television event again, in its entirety. Ross Hunter, the producer, worked his magic here again! Jim Lee

All-Star Cast! Great Drama!
I love the miniseries from the 1970s through the 1990s, and this was no exception! What a collection of great Hollywood stars, from Kirk Douglas to Anne Baxter, and the wonderful Christopher Plummer. Great drama, with lots of twists and turns. Really enjoyed it!

Great movie
Saw the movie years ago and read the book as well. The movie is great and moves at a very fast clip. Not disappointing at all.

Faithful Adaption
From a great mid seventies novel comes this adaption of The Moneychangers. The mini series is a rather faithful adaption of a story about the banking industry, intertwining the powerful and the powerless.Christopher Plummer is perfectly cast while Kirk Douglas is good, but his performance is not quite as muscular as the character called for. The story is rather dated, especially in these post crash days where it's obvious how much the banking industry cares about it's less wealthy clients. My only complaint is the way the characters of Miles and Juanita were left hanging. The book gave these important individuals a bit of closure that was lacking in the adaption. With so much time, there really was no excuse.Still, there's much to enjoy about this series. I've waited a long time to see the full version of this drama and it was worth it.

This ain't no story about Wall Street.....
This clearly wasn't about Wall Street. I should have researched this selection, especially since it came from Arthur Hailey. It's over the top politicization and the premise as a whole is such total fabrication of banks and the way they operated in a time when there were more community and even larger city banks. The movie was pure garbageIf you want to have a pity party about a bunch of people feeling sorry for themselves and being 'victims', then buy it, otherwise, watch an old TCM movie.

Enjoyable hokum for a while but turns tedious around the halfway point.
This was a trip down memory lane. I recall seeing some of it on my first visit to the US in 1977 and decided to remind myself. If memory serves, it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the source novel and embraces the strengths and failings thereof. However, my interest declined rapidly after inserting DVD2 and I gave up.The numbers quoted were definitely interesting. A bank's VP was earning $75k and could expect to be on $125k when president. Compare that with Jamie Dimon's $31.5 mm last year. A giant conglomerate wanting to borrow $50mm put the bank into regulatory danger.

GOOD SERIES , SHAME ABOUT THE QUALITY
I've waited 36 years to see this again so I'm glad its been released and it is an excellent series. But this release is let down by the picture quality . I had hoped that at some point over the last 36 years that new copies of the episodes would have been made but from this disc it looks like the prints used for this dvd have been sitting at some tv station since 1978 and gathering dust and they've been picked up only for this release . It's a real shame as this was glossy expensive peaktime US drama with a superb cast but I've seen better quality on pirated product . Fortunately it's a cracking story but the sub standard images do distract the viewer. If you've been waiting to see it for years then its still worth buying but be prepared for quality that is simply unacceptable on dvd in this day and age.
