Reading GM Rick Wing’s “Shaolin Number 2 - Leading The Way” ..his newest contribution to his Northern Shaolin Style book series… is as much about Chinese Martial arts as it is about classical Chinese culture and especially martial arts culture… and history.. This book like those before it … is insightful, helpful…intriguing , fascinating and funny all in one package…This is a book for all seasons.. there is something for everyone here!In his book “Leading the Way”, GM Wing “leads us “ the reader through the form..describing each movement (each movement name given in both English and Chinese characters) in writing and in picture. GM Wing demonstrates… like very few can… how horse stance and the “Approach the Face Kick,” for example, “should” look like… how he was taught they are suppose to look like…low stances , high kicks, and clean precise movements are clearly illustrated in the numerous images provided for our reference… along with a section on “Selected Applications” from the form supplied to stimulate our own exploration of how we might interpret possible applications of each movement!As if all that is not enough…. in this same book we can enjoy Chinese (martial arts) calligraphy (with translations into English) from Sifu Kenneth Hui and the late Sifu Paul Eng, a wonderful biography of / interview with GM Raymond Wong…(My Jong Law Horn style, a founding father of the Tai Mantis Association) and an absolutely delightful discussion and history of the use of Double Hook Swords and Double Sabers…Thank-you GM Rick Wing for allowing us to walk with you.. and to see through your eyes … once again…yet another aspect of the world of Classical Chinese Martial Arts!
