Rit Back to Black Dye Kit, 5.88 x 5 x 2.38

This actually worked better than I expected. If you follow the instructions correctly it will turn the fabric darker for sure. The value for the money is good and was very easy to use. I had a hoody that I loved but it was very faded. I ended up purchasing another exact hoody except they did not have black so I got the gray instead. After using this on both items it turned my gray hoody to black and my faded black hoody is now extra black like when I first purchased it. I have not washed them yet but from the way it looks and feels I don’t see if fading out quickly. I would definitely purchase again and recommend this to anyone trying to darken their fabrics.

It was my intention to dye my black work t-shirts since they were well-used and well-washed but not ready for replacement. The t-shirts came out so well that I decided to expand the dying experiment to my other black well-used and well-washed clothing. Pictured with the t-shirts are a pair of black Levi's and my favorite black hoodie that I decided to include in the process. Also added was a pillow! The Levi's required two (2) complete dye-kit applications while the pillow, hoodie, and t-shirts were good with one. The coverage was good enough for the first application to the Levi's but I noticed some slight streaking when fully processed through to the final machine wash. The second application addressed the most noticeable streaks to the Levi's leaving the jeans with a very presentable appearance. I wouldn't stretch to say that the Levi's look off-the-rack, but they look pretty close! I used the entire contents of the dye and finisher. You'll know what I mean when you read the instructions. YES, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!! For instance, instead of 3 gallons of water as instructed, I used 3 gallons of water + 2 quarts (1-1/2 cup salt; 3/4 TBSP dish soap) and the ENTIRE contents of the dye. I stirred the dye (with clothes) constantly for 15 minutes, in hot water, in a large rubbermaid tub (see pic), then stirring intermittently for another 30 minutes. Repeat for finishing solution excluding the salt and dish soap. My second dying session was much cleaner than the first. Please wear gloves and even safety glasses. I promise that if you move your clothing around too quickly while in the solution, you will have a nice mess to clean-up later. Go slow and deliberate, this is not a quick process if you want good results. NOTE: For bathtub clean-up, I mixed bleach with Dawn dish soap and sprayed the fiberglass/shower, let it sit for 5 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush- viola!

This is the tale of a lady who was feeling too cheap to buy new $9 black shirts to replace her faded work 100% cotton Beefy Tees. On a whim, I ordered this kit (without reading) assuming I could just dump the stuff in the washing machine and get a fresh new load of black shirts. Yea, that was not the case. After actually reading the directions, I realized I just spent $10 to dye 2-3 black shirts?! …….and worse, the washing machine method was not recommended. ☹ I was not deterred, instead I ordered a second kit and decided to give it go anyway. First thing I did was wash my whites, so there was zero chance of me messing them up with residual dye; and so I could pay attention to my washing machine’s agitation and fill cycles. My washing machine is a top load with full agitator; it only has auto-sensing or deep fill for water options which posed a challenge. Also, it does not have a pause option, so I had to unplug it to get it to hold the dye water long enough. For the dye process, I boiled 2 cups of course ground kosher salt in a pot while the washer filled with hot water and 11 medium men’s shirts (nearly twice as many as I should have done per the directions). Since, I used the auto sensing water level, I had to add the shirts while it filled. I then removed the shirts - added 2 bottles of dye directly to the water- let it agitate for a minute – added the boiling hot salt water and dish soap – let it agitate for a couple of minutes – and then added the wet shirts back in. My washer agitated for approx. 10 minutes before wanting to drain, so I unplugged it and broke out my kayak paddle. I paddled the shirts around every 7-10 minutes, and used elbow-high gloves half way through to pull the shirts out and put back in. (the internet said pulling them out of the water was important to rearrange the fabric so it dyed evenly?) I kept the shirts in the dye for a total of 60 minutes, and then set the washer to drain and spin. While the machine was draining the dye water, I added the color fixative to a large pot of near-boiling water. I dumped the hot fixative water over the drained (not rinsed) shirts and started an auto-sensing hot water wash cycle. Since my machine only agitates for 10 minutes, I unplugged it and let it soak in the fixative water for an additional 10min (total 20), before resuming the cycle through cold rinse & spin. Once done, I washed the clothes with detergent on a cold deep fill cycle. Surprisingly, there was very little, if any, color bleed in the water. My results were worth the $20 and time it cost me, but barely. I think a 3rd bottle would have made better results since I had more than 6 gallons of water in my machine. If I did this again, I think I would do 4 bottles and deep fill the machine so I could add in a few pair of scrub pants, to make it worth all the effort. Note: There was no staining on the metal in my machine, but there was a bit on the plastic agitator. I ran a load of old towels with Oxyclean after dyeing; this took care of the residue in the machine. I also had to take out the fabric softer cup and components to rinse the dye water off. This product is seriously one of the best things I have ever gotten. I bought it multiple times now. I am a millenial goth lady, married to a gen x goth lady. I have 2 daughters who also like a mix of bright cheery clothes, and black goth clothes. Basically we have a lot of black clothing, and a lot of it is incredibly faded. I love thrifting as well, and sometimes I end up with cute things in colors I dont wear much. I also love stretchy comfy jean shorts but the softest are always light wash which I begrudgingly wear. Anyways, I decided to try this on some things, because we had an accident where bleach spilled in my laundry room and me and my friend tried to fix it as fast as possible but so much got bleach stained :( anyway I liked this product so much that I bought tons more with 1 day shipping to try on other things, because I got an adhd fixation going on now lol. I was able to dye me and my wifes faded black shirts so they look crisp and dark black, in multiple materials too not just cotton! Even band t shirts etc if they are printed the pattern doesnt dye which is wonderful. Was able to dye some light color band shirts I like but tend to not wear for thr colors, and now I love wearing them. I then dyed many things like tank tops that had colors I didnt like, and did the same for clothes my daughters didnt like the colors. Had a blue and white and navy striped top that is now light grey, charcoal, and black stripes which looks absolutely awesome! I dyed maxi skirts we had, including a white one that was totally see thru which I can now wear. I added vinegar and salt which help with certain materials, and used 2 big stock pots on the stove, and dyed in one, and fixant it with the other. I did not need to stir for 30 to 60 min like it said either, just occasional like soup lol. I also got extra dye because the water evaporates and gets sucked up by clothes, so if u are doing a ton u will have to add water and lots more dye, because towards the end, the dye water will just make it grey, its not as powerful, so keep it new. If anything is too light just dye it again after washing it. Anyways this is awesome, and I am excited to wear my clothes again, its like having a new wardrobe, and I'm so happy, as is my wife. My kids want me to buy more colors soon like purple which we all like, so I'm gonna try that soon too. Wish I tried this in the past to avoid giving away clothing id have still worn! Buy this, and fix up your clothes, you wont regret it!

If I knew how much effort dyeing my pants would take, and how much water I would need to use, I may have continued wearing my faded black pants as is. The idea of re-using old clothing is nice, but instead of dyeing, it's more economical and environmentally friendly to let the clothing fade and keep wearing it. I would only recommend using this product on clothing that is irreplaceable. For something like my pants, which are already around 7 years old, I could buy another pair for $50-$100 and keep wearing the faded ones at home or when working outside. Clothing that is faded is often worn in other ways too and may not last much longer after being dyed. I used the bucket method for dying the cotton pants. 60 minute soak in hot water with salt, small squirt of dish soap, plus the full bottle of dye. The instructions say to stir "consistently" so I set a timer to move the pants around in the dye every 10 minutes. Then another 20 minutes in the color fix with more hot water, stirring every 5 minutes. Then hand washed in another bucket with laundry detergent. Lastly, I repeatedly filled and emptied two 5 gallon buckets of water, trying to rinse the pants. The instructions say to rinse until the water begins to be clear. My rinse water was black every time I poured it out. Eventually I got tired of squeezing water out of the pants over and over and put them in my washing machine for one last double rinse. At this point I must have used at least 30 gallons of water, a lot of that being hot water, and still the pants left behind black dye in the washing machine after two rinse cycles. The pants now look very black and like-new. But due to the cost of the product, the cost of heating gallons and gallons of water, the cost of using many more gallons of cold water, and the roughly two hours I spent on this plus all the cleanup time, I don't know if I would do this again.

Permanent black dye kit. I redyed some faded black denim I had 3 pair. This kit did a fabulous job in the dye. They look new again. I would totally recommend the black dye for any faded denim you might have. I might try the dark indigo next this was so good. It is a process but I got all 3 pairs dyed and the same time, set and laundered in about 5 hours. Go for it! Having said all of this, I never hesitate to update my reviews should new info seem useful. I love wearing black but clothes do tend to fade after washing. I had several t's and dresses that needed refreshing. This works! It makes black clothes look new again and extends the life of my favorites. Unfortunately, it doesn't last long when washed. I used the setting powder, but I'm not sure it does much; clothes do bleed when washed. It works temporarily, so I'll need to repeat the process again to keep them looking new. Use a bucket; the black dye stains everything, especially the sink! It comes out with bleach and a good scrubbing.

Just follow the instructions and make sure you set aside the required time.

This helped restore two of my black sweatpants.

Worn out black jeans, cap and jogger pants with a bleach stain....all back to pitch black. The jean labelling survived and kept its color. It you have plastic printing then it wont survive process as you need hot water. I wonder what other colours then have.
