Great book for kids who like US history, historical fiction & authentic Native American stories
This was a very interesting book that the kids and I enjoyed reading. Although the book is fictional, the Native American author did a lot of research and spoke with many individuals who had gone to these boarding schools, so that his book would be as authentic as possible. It is appropriate for Middle school kids and for older elementary students with high level reading skills. Kids who like historical fiction and US history will probably like this book.

A well told story
The heart of this novel is above all a well-told story of father and son. The wonderful things about it are the historic importance and the ethics of the road. There's plenty for a 10 year old (and up) to ponder and weigh against his/her own experiences, no matter what cultural background he/she comes from. As an adult in my 70's, I loved it. There's a certain 9-year-old in my life who is sure to receive this soon. Great gift for middle readers through adulthood.

Great family read with historic perspectives
An engaging story, using cultural references from the Great Depression, accurate depictions of indigenous boarding school history, with great turns of phrase. My 8 and 11 year old are captivated by the tale, and I find it hard to put down as an adult. Great read!

Must read for US History Teachers
Good book…Very eye opening to what US History class never taught us when it came to the Native Americans and WWI vets.

Got for my sister
I honestly have no idea. I got this book for my sister’s class and apparently she’s not even reading the book. Maybe I’ll take the time to read it myself once I have some downtime.

Eye Opening
My 6th grade class reads this book. They were very interesting in learning more about Natice American Boarding Schools. Great way to open your eyes to other cultures.
