Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment

Fabulous book for beginners & professional wood carvers. Best in market !!!!!!!!
I heard that this book was good, but I can't put it down! It is very well written and it explains everything in the order that a beginner or a professional would take something away when finished. This is the only book you need to learn about wood carving & tools. You will feel like you went to school when you finish this book. Have you tools out with a block of wood to follow along with the explanations. I would buy the other book by Chris "woodcarving course & reference manual. You will be set. This book was written in 1994 by Chris so don't buy book 1 & book 2 because these are this book "woodcarving tools, materials & equipment" made into 2 books same information, u just pay twice as much!!!!

Chris Pye is the best. This book is great too
Chris Pye is the best. This book is great too. My review isn't necessarily about the content. Chris Pye originally released this version of the book, and then rereleased the content as two separate books (volumes 1 & 2). I did not know this and purchased this book AND volume 2, (volume 1 wasn't available). I effectively bought 50% of the material twice. So buy this book, or the other two volumes, but not all 3 unless you REALLY like wasting repetitive information

Chris' exhaustive coverage of sharpening saved me hundreds and gave me a very valuable skill.
Chris' detailed section on sharpening is priceless. It is so valuable to now know what in particular makes a gouge slice through wood cleanly. Using this insight helped me"commission" correctly a set of Schaaf gouges, save hundreds in the process, and develop a much needed and valuable skill. Thanks Chris!

best teacher you can find!
look for a video by him; you'll know how good this book is. or any books by him. a genius, and he shares his genius with all for a small price of admission. i'm glad he didn't become an insurance salesman.

Excellent reference. It is not a project book
Excellent reference. It is not a project book, or a beginner's introduction, but rather a nearly complete reference work on all aspects of woodcarving, written by a mastercarver. If that is what you are looking for, buy it!

Background reading
I'm far from a novice at sharpening, but there's always something to learn. I stumbled across some of the authors advice on line and decided his book might be a useful way to broaden my knowledge. It was, and I have decided to reshape some of my tools along the lines he recommends, partly reflecting a change in the type of work I attempt. Lots of information here, and particularly worthwhile because he makes it quite clear when he is discussing his own preferences rather than passing them off as 'Gospel'.I'm considering volume 2...

Book in very good order
A well written book - very informative especially for a beginner like me. Chris Pye certainly knows his subject - his woodcarving site is excellent; well presented videos.
