has anyone attempted putting a broken down 10.5inch AR15 in it?

A 10.5 upper is still gonna be around 20 inches long This a bag meant to hold magazines and either range gear or active shooter gear. You could fit a Glock 19 in it but even a Glock 17 would be a bit big. Interior dimension is roughly 12Lx6Tx4W

Is there a padded compartment for a pistol.

No padded compartment,but some molle on one side of the main compartment.You could probably riig up a pistol rug or holster to work.
