More frustration than fun.
ETA: They fixed this game to the point of it being the very best in the series - changing my review from two to five stars. *UPDATE* This was a statement made by an EA spokesperson to Polygon on or around 12/4/13: "First, we want to thank the fans out there that are playing and supporting us with Battlefield 4," the spokesperson said. "We know we still have a ways to go with fixing the game -- it is absolutely our No. 1 priority. The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in the final stages of development by the time issues began with Battlefield 4, we decided to fulfill our promise to deliver it this week, but we're not moving onto future projects or expansions until we sort out all the issues with Battlefield 4. We know many of our players are frustrated, and we feel their pain. We will not stop until this is right." (Source: [...] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When I got my Xbox One yesterday, I was giddy with excitement to pop this game in (it's the only game I was really wanting to play at launch). Initially, I was blown away - the graphics are amazing, the sounds are crisp, and the controls are mostly fluid. But then...I kept playing. The problem I've always had with this series is that there seems to be some sort of "penalty" for being a newcomer to the game. The starting guns suck and they have limited attachments. My first game (unranked) I was dumped into a game of level 60-70 somethings. You know what, I'm not going to knock a star off for that though - it's how the series is albeit not the best system in my opinion. The reason this game loses stars is because is when you do get a game going you'll have "stutter" lag. Meaning, at the time you most need your connection, you lag. Enemy in front of you? Lag. Shooting an unsuspecting enemy? Lag. It's the kind of lag that freezes the screen in place for a second - not the "why isn't that guy dying?!" lag. And let's not forget my most recent experience, and why I have time to write this review... The game chokes without any warning and takes you back to the Xbox home screen. This has just happened to me four times in a row. The servers are crashing and this game is riddled with other odd bugs. I gave it an extra star because of the first points I mentioned but that's being a bit generous. (I should probably add that the menus are so clunky - especially when you are modifying equipment and changing loadouts.) Battlefield 4 is like that girl you meet out at a bar who looks hot because you may have had too many and the lights are low. But time reveals all things and in the morning this game doesn't look too good without makeup, you've got a headache, and you're wondering...why did I spend so much money last night?

an amazing game!
Single player game is like every other ( objective, go do it). But multiplayer is where this games core lies. Like being a sniper, then awesome. Like driving a tank, good for you. Love running around shooting anything that moves, boy you're in for a treat. Reviews for this game came out too early. Since its initial release this game has been patched and plays amazingly. To be in every aspect of the battle with 64 players is the most intense experience I have ever experienced. I loved bf3 and this game pushed the boundaries on the Xbox one. It looks amazing, it plays amazing, and when you shoot someone with a sniper rifle for the first time with the impulse triggers on the Xbox one I had to say "s***!" its like you're really shooting a high powered rifle. I do hate how it makes me say that but wow. Now I sound sadistic. I'm not, its just this game gets the feel of so many things right. If you get in a tank it is constantly moving left and right exactly how you would imagine it. I can't play forza 5 online because the cars drive how they would in real life. Battlefield is the same. I have played first person shooters more than racing games so it comes natural. Call of duty players will be confused at first. But gaming is always about being better. This game offers call of duty multiplayer with 20 players and also offers 64 players for all out battle. Really a great game. EA/Dice screw up ALOT of the time but I know when to support a company and the time is now. Look at it this way... Microsoft endorsed EA, Disney endorsed EA, Disney endorsed EA, EA endorsed Dice, Dice and EA are making star wars games! Battlefront 2 and mirrors edge 2 are being developed! Disney has never made anything that wasn't good (may have been less good but was still good). Even though EA has been the worst company ever still they make money. Its because of you. You keep buying their games. And by all means please do not stop now. Talk as much crap as you want but you'll still buy their product. And for that I thank you. But really buy this game. This is one that will go down in history. Amazing quality and devoted game makers dice are. Yes we all want a profit but at least they're fixing the bugs. It takes dedication to do what they do. Most of you don't have that commitment. Patience is a virtue. Great and astonishing game. It may have been rough in the beginning but now hopefully most of the stress has been lifted off of you DICE. EA, you always have problems, but somehow you manage it. Before I hated you, but after all of this stuff, I adore you. Keep it up. Awesome job. Its always darkest before the sunrise. Buy this amazing game!

This is an action thrill ride that will send chills down your spine!
First I want to get something out of the way. Now there's many reviews all over the web complaining about nonstop issues with the game, I wanted to point out the fact that I purchased this game and my system two weeks ago and I have had very little if any issues whatsoever. So it seems that dice and electronic arts have obviously fix whatever problems there have been in the past. Now on to the review: I was raised on first-person shooters, I've played the original doom, duke nukem, Duke Nukem 3-D, Wolfenstein, and rise of the triad for PC! I then moved on to Goldeneye, & perfect dark Which in my opinion was one of the greatest first-person shooters ever made. Then I played the biggest jump in gaming that I've ever seen which was crisis for the PC in 2008. I love my first-person shooters, and Battlefield is as good as crisis in many ways. From the get-go this game starts out fantastically! It's like 100 MPH roller coaster ride that never stops one bit! I love how they start the game out and then backtrack to show you how you got there originally. The storyline is absolutely fantastic then again this is coming from a guy who stop playing video games about an eight years ago. The game pits you in a rollover vehicle that has been submerged in water and you and your squad are stuck. They then send you back 10 minutes earlier and you get to play up until that point to see what happened. Once the game takes off it never stops you're constantly on the go on missions. This game does some serious stuff that I've never seen before in a video game. Flying through the air as you parachute Down onto battleships (shooting your guns off while you're doing it), falling off buildings, slipping vehicles, entire cities caving in around you, you can blow the walls off buildings, damage actually shows unlike most games! If you love first-person shooters then this is definitely the game for you I do like the online multiplayer as well I've had zero issues with that either. This game is gotten massive memory and massive maps I've never seen anything like it! You can fly helicopters, drive Humvees, driving doing buggies, and you can drive tanks. You can also drive watercraft! It's truly remarkable to see what this game can do on one map the exact same time it's rendering so much information. I never thought a home gaming console and ever make it this far so quickly. Hands-down if you haven't purchased this game already you are missing out big time! Do yourself a favor and spend the $39 on Amazon to buy this game!

DICE/EA - Your Game Sucks
Awesome game... when it works, which is about 33% of the time now. Shame on DICE/EA/whoever for launching such a half-baked game. I can't believe I paid $60 for it, then paid another $50 for premium... yeah, I know, there's a term for that... BOHICA. I spend more time trying to connect to a multiplayer game, then actually playing one. Sometimes, it puts me in the room for the incorrect game mode. Then, when the DICE/EA Gods finally deem me worthy enough to put me in a Conquest or Domination game, it crashes midway and I get booted out to the Xbone home screen. A little bit of advice for the DICE/EA junior developers - if you guys are expecting this twitchy behavior, then how about throwing us a bone and providing more info/status when we're trying to connect to a game or why we're unexpectedly booted out of one? So we're not left in the dark wondering why the Conquest and Domination Nazis forbid us from playing (no Conquest for you!). It makes me wonder if the same guys also did the Obamacare website. Call of Duty is on my ban list for lag, now Battlefield 4 may be the last Battlefield I buy. This lack of QA is intolerable and should not be rewarded. UPDATE 07-DEC - Good grief, the game works 0% of the time now. The game no longer launches/loads and I get booted out to the home screen 100% of the time now. Whatever update they published out last night made things worst for me. I hope uninstalling and re-installing the game will fix it. I wish I could rate it 0 stars. UPDATE 09-DEC - After uninstalling, then re-installing the game and add-ons, it still wouldn't load. After contemplating taking my $110 disc to the range for target practice, I power-cycled my Xbone, and now all is back to normal, where normal is the game working 33% of the time. Having said that, it's been a pain to get into a multiplayer game w/ friends. We're either scattered across different teams or different squads... and that's if everybody made it into the game. BF3 had the notion of creating a squad and inviting your friends into your squad. BF4 (and Xbone) just took a big step back in progress, especially w/ Xbone parties and party chat. Yeap, there's a term for that... SNAFU. UPDATE 19-DEC - DICE released an update on 13-DEC: [...] I've played a couple of days w/ this update and it was still a royal pain to connect to a multiplayer game. It would still crash mid-game for me as well. What good is fixing bugs if I can't even connect and play a multiplayer game? Well, on that note, DICE has released another update today (19-DEC): [...] From the looks of it, this update may resolve those issues and I shall find out. UPDATE 03-JAN - I've only played the game a few times since DICE's latest update. Needless to say, it's still no bueno. The first couple of times, it was a little better getting into a game of Conquest or Domination, but last night was awful. Party chat was not working and after 30 minutes of trying to get it to work, we switched to game chat (which sucks until you're in a game). When we were all finally able to get into the same game [of Conquest], it was so laggy that I thought I was playing Call of Duty. We decided to leave that server to find a new one, but apparently that was a big mistake. We lost our connections to EA servers and could not get into the multiplayer menu, premium menu, or battlelog. Seriously, I can't keep telling my friends "one more time" because their patience is wearing thinner than mine. This game is supposed to be my place of Zen, not a source of stress. UPDATE 20-JAN - It looks like things have gotten better; I've played the game a few times since my last update and my friends and I can finally play more than one match of Conquest per session. However, there's still a few things wrong. First, don't bother with Quick Match and go straight to Server Browser because Quick Match has not been reliable for me; and when it puts me in the queue, I'm on the black screen [loading] indefinitely w/ no control whatsoever - I have to quit and restart the game, then quickly hit B when it prompts to leave the queue or else I'll get put back into the black loading screen. Server Browser works much better, but I have to scroll all the way past full rooms to a room w/ open spots - why can't they default the sort by ascending number of open spots instead of descending number of open spots? Party chat seems to be running ok - I haven't had many issues getting the gang together w/ party chat. And last, but not least, the server will almost always lag out once per match. Having said that, I have updated my rating accordingly and, unfortunately, that is the max number of stars I will give the game given the frustration it has caused me the past couple of months. UPDATE 22-FEB - The game is still a buggy and leggy mess, and there's no amount of free virtual crap and quadruple points months that DICE/EA can give to make it better. How can a player w/ 0% health kill me w/ 2 shots out of an assault rifle and I have 100% health? I'm tired of cursing at this game, I'm done. I tried the Titanfall Beta and it looks promising. Since it's also an EA title, I'm going to wait a few weeks before buying it. I've learned my lesson w/ BF4.

What Could Have Been a #1 Game Plagued by Apparent Irresponsibility
I'd like to start off by saying I first had Battlefield 4 on the PS3 and as soon as I started playing it on Xbox One I was absolutely amazed at how good the graphics are and how smoothly it ran. It literally feels like you're controlling a solider with a camera on their helmet in real life. I have never played a Battlefield that was on a console that could properly handle it without screen tearing or frame rate drops until playing Battlefield on the Xbox One. When I first got BF4 on the PS3 in November it was the only game I ever owned that you tried to play it and it wouldn't work, you couldn't join a match and you'd have to try over and over dozens of times until it would find a match and sometimes it would freeze half way or kick you out mid-match. From the reviews it seemed the Xbox One version also had these problems early on. By now most major problems have been fixed but there are still some annoying little bugs I experience. I mainly play TDM but unlike COD I actually enjoy all of Battlefield's game modes and once I started playing conquest I did experience the weird bug where you are stuck in the sky and have to respawn to get out of it. There are still little annoyances like your classes being switched to older ones and having to re apply (which is made so much harder since you can't access them in the game menus or after the match but only in game.) Other things are where your laser sight doesn't remember if you had it toggled on or off after a respawn or how the dog tags and other notifications for equipment never go away so you don't really know what you've earned that's new, among other bugs but unlike the ones early on these don't ruin the game totally. I only played a few missions of the campaign on the PS3. It doesn't seem like a ground breaking story but I do like it so far and find it more believable than a COD story. I haven't finished it so I don't know if the campaign is as short as others say it is. I can say that at least since they put XP-like score based achievements in the campaign it makes it worth replaying until you can do well enough on each mission to unlock the more valuable achievement which is an idea I really like to bring a concept that keeps people hooked playing multiplier to the story. I'm satisfied with the on disc maps so I don't care about the DLC and especially since the game was broken from the start I don't think DICE or EA deserves the extra money from a game release they clearly didn't take seriously. Unlike Ghosts though, Battlefield 4 had a much better next gen debut and I enjoy it much more than Ghosts. It looks better, sounds better, plays better and that makes it worth a purchase. I still find COD more addicting and play it more but over all I like Battlefield more. There isn't a counter to know how many people are online when you are playing but it never feels empty like Ghosts does on the Xbox One. At the current used price Battlefield 4 is definitely worth the purchase for showing the great graphics these new consoles are capable of and shows how close a FPS can get to true realism compared to many other ones which don't come as close. However it needs to kept in mind that the game was released nearly unplayable and still has some bugs so I don't think it's worth buying the DLC. I also don't think EA or DICE deserves the reward of having Battlefield Hardline pre-ordered or buying the Season Pass. They need to prove they actually take their games seriously so I hope that is the reason they have delayed Hardline to make sure they get it right this time. Either way I wouldn't suggest buying it new but rather waiting and see if they can redeem themselves and publish a working game since Battlefield already has all the elements of a great shooter if they can make it as reliable as a Call of Duty. Until then I think having Battlefield 4 is still a good choice.

It just gets better and better
I got this game because I am a big fan of the Battlefield genre of games and have been since the original Battlefield 1942. I think the graphics are stunning in this game and the campaign puts your console to the test with some epic gameplay and visuals. - Is it fun? Hell yes it is, I will tell you that this game will give you some serious hours of gameplay in the campaign alone, and endless hours of fun while playing multiplayer with the different modes of gameplay you can jump into. - Good replay value? Most definitely! You will unlock some multiplayer kit items while playing the normal campaign and with more unlocks and 4 DLC (Down Loadable Content) packs to make the multiplayer action more robust, you can't go wrong with this game. - Can I play with friends? Yes you can with the "Play with Squad" option, you can have a total of 5 people in a party to jump into a game and battle it out against other people around the globe. - 32 v 32 battles on the Xbox One! You can't get those types of numbers with the Xbox 360 which makes the big team battles ... well big team battles.

Glitchy but Fun
Fun game and it came with the China Rising expansion pack. The only thing is that Battlefield is super glitchy on my Xbox, I constantly have to do a hard restart whenever I back out of a game because it will not reload the title menu. Also it will constantly reset my classes whenever I back out of a game or lobby. It also takes three or four tries to get the disc to read on my Xbox. If the game was not so much fun I would give it 2 stars because I've had so many problems. The game play is distinct when it comes to first person shooters, if you are expecting something similar to Call of Duty, don't. Real life combat, bullets and shells will drop over distances and do not expect to fire you favorite assault rifle on full auto and hit anything. Good players in Vehicles are almost impossible to kill, just a heads up

Very disappointing, wait until it's about $10-20
I've played and have generally liked this series, but after playing it, I probably wouldn't pay more than $20 tops for it and maybe not even that. First off, it's ridiculously buggy. I made it about half way through the game 3x and it kept going back to the home screen. When I'd press continue mission or resume mission, it would take me back to about the 1/4 way point. I finally found a short term fix but searching youtube, but for this game being a couple years old already, this is insane. Not to mention, I had to turn my internet connection off because it kept trying to download a 3 gb update which wouldn't be that big of a deal in the states, but I'm deployed to Afghanistan and it's not doable, the internet is too slow. ****SPOILERS**** - The game play wasn't that bad, it was actually fun for the time it lasted, but it was very short. Once I figured out the save problem, I played it straight through on hard in about 4 hours without getting killed once. - The story was horrible, really cheesy and very unrealistic. For one, regular grunt Marines aren't going to be doing CIA type three man missions in the middle of China. Second, the dialogue was like a bad soap opera. On the last mission, when they repelled up the Chinese aircraft carrier and were having a 2 minute argument over who should plant the C4. And sinking a carrier with C4? Come on. - Maybe it's because I am a veteran, but the uniform details were ridiculous and really annoying. You'd think the creators would have input from ex military. Some dudes were wearing 4 American flag patches, one of the main characters had 2 stacked right on top of each other on his body armor. They had supposed SEALS in full battle rattle along with middle eastern kashmir scarfs guarding a hospital ward on a US aircraft carrier. And that's just a few, the inattention to detail was sad. - The AI, including your teammates, was horrible. I walked right up to a couple of Russian troops from the front right in the middle of a firefight and slit their throats. Instead of flanking targets, your teammates follow you on your hip wherever you go. - There's more, but one of the very most annoying parts of the game was not being able to skip through conversations, etc. Unlike Call of Duty, you have to sit there and listen to ever little dialogue between the other teammates, etc. Overall, I'll give this 2 stars for the campaign game play(when you can actually play). I didn't play multi player yet, don't have fast enough internet. The quality of COD Advanced Warfare to this is night and day. I've purchased 9 games for my XBOX One and this is probably the only one I won't replay, at least the campaign mode. If you can score this for $10-20, go for it, but I wouldn't pay more than that.
