Q: Will this hold moisture? Does anyone know the particle size?

From my perspective, the sand does hold some moisture. I used it in succulent container gardens, and when watering plants in the garden, the water was absorbed but only a little seeped out of the container. The sand is a very fine grain.

Q: is this ok for a fire pit?

It's a very very small amount. I bought it for a centerpiece and it barely covered the bottom of a 9 inch bowl. I then ordered a bulk of 50 pounds that worked. May want to consider that instead!
