Not bad,Vlad!
I can't actually say I grew up listening to Ashkenazy's Chopin, but I used to be--still am---a great fan of the Decca sound,so naturally sought these out,but didn't collect them all. Here's my chance to alter that.Does he beat Rubinstein, for example? In sound quality, certainly.Interpretation wise,I can't say.Because it's not an exact science, each player sees things differently,as every actor stresses,or doesn't,certain accents. So a "best" becomes meaningless, despite various reviews, all of which are contradictory anyway. There is no such thing,I think.Just a best for you.And for me,this is an "as good as".Any,I think.I've become less enchanted with Vlad of late, mainly due to his role as Decca "house pianist".No disgrace in it,but he can't be a master of all trades.Or maybe he can,but he's among a very few if so.But these are fine examples of him playing a composer he loves.

Frederic the Great
Whenever I would hear a piece of Chopin's piano music on the radio during the late 1970s and 1980s it was almost always played by Vladimir Ashkenazy.Sure, there were other pianists but at that time with regard to Chopin, Ashkenazy was top of the piano pops.I delighted in his performances. The chance to acquire the complete collection of these masterful recordings of Chopin's solo piano works at a bargain price is a privilege not to be missed.I remain delighted by them.Recommended.
