yes depending on type of medium you may need to adjust the cutting pressure

Does the joy use the same blade as the explore air 2?

No, different sized blades. Because of the compact nature of the machine, Cricut Joy has a unique-sized blade that fits its carriage. On the other hand, Cricut Explore series and Cricut Maker series machines use the same Fine Point Blade and Housing.

Do you need to buy the housing separately? or can you simply replace the blade using the same housing you have?

You can use the same housing just push the plunger at top of housing and remove old blade ... be careful pushing in new blade it’s sharp ....also you can clean and sharpen old blade by stabbing into a piece of aluminum foil

Does this blade work well with foam boards?

Works like it should

Works like it should and have had no issues with the blades. Only thing is I never know when to replace the blade so I usually just do that about once a year or when I notice the cuts I am getting are not so great. And sometimes I will put in a new blade right before I am about to cut something important out that I want to get a nice, clean cut from.
