For a budget fountain pen this really writes great. Love the color too.

Let me start by saying that this pen is made out of aluminum AND DOES CONDUCT ELECTRICITY! I was given a quick shock the other day, not thinking about it, when I was using my Lamy Safari Al-star to fish a strawberry Pop-Tart out of the toaster.Besides that, this is a totally safe pen and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a shred of style and decency. The Lamy Safari Al-star is more than just another fountain pen, it is a philosophy. This utilitarian apparatus allows you to swap out the nib, barrel, cap... well, just about everything! It comes with a lifetime warranty to back this all up, which is great, as I often write my poetry in extreme conditions, in order to provoke feeling. All you have to do is send it on over Germany! Ideally you will have a back up, as you may occasionally find your pen partaking in a transcontinental journey for a little fix-me-up, and it will arrive back home as glorious as ever.The matte black body with a black clip is VERY STEALTHY. Upon glancing at my pen, people often ask me if I am in fact who I say I am, and not a secret agent. This is not uncommon in my line of work. Another stealthy advantage of the Lamy is that the nib is very quiet when it hits the paper. This might not be an issue for most people, but for gentlemen with sensitive eardrums such as myself, it is a godsend! Although you can get slightly cheaper fountain pens, they will likely leak, bend, or make terrible scratching noises as they besmirch your stationery and repress your creativity. I am proud to say that my Lamy Safari Al-star does not leak one bit! The only issues experienced with the Lamy have been due to the personal ignorance of your correspondent.The little ink window is not only adorable, it allows insight into the status of your ink cartridge. I would recommend either the Z10 or the Z24, unless you want to use one of the abhorrent disposable ink refills that the pen comes with. Now, I know what you are asking yourself and the answer is no: The Lamy Safari Al-Star will not fit an International ink cartridge, so don't even try it, you curious rascals! This is a slight downfall but it certainly does not diminish my love for this impeccable device.

I was worried since my lamy safari and studio felt genuinely awful to write with that this would be something similar, but this pen feels amazing to write with and hold.

The pen is in good shape and writes nicely. However, due to handling, the box was trashed. Therefore, not suitable for gifting.

I have several Lamy fountain pens, and you really cannot go wrong with the AlStar - the aluminum body makes it lightweight and sturdy. I write without the cap posted, so the balance is just right for me. The nibs are always quality - the mediums are a little finer than some, to be expected from a European company. Got this one in the stealth black and I use it with my Midori Traveller's Notebook to make lists and journal notes. Will always keep one on my desk, they're a great value. Order the converter as the Lamy cartridges are proprietary to Lamy.

The pen is darker and more saturated than it appears in the picture. Perhaps the anodization is different batch to batch, and perhaps the picture on Amazon is a bit desaturated. The pen I received is royal blue and the one in the image to my eye is closer to baby blue or sky blue.
