Shiva: The Lord of Yoga

The best of its kind
Here we are in the 21st century. For centuries, deep spiritual writings were hidden from the general public, partly because most people wouldn't understand what they were speaking about, and the writers of the knowledge wanted to keep the information pure. So, interesting that in just the past 30 years, so much of the knowledge and understanding is available very openly. What is seems to mean is that there are so many more people that are able to understand, apply, and profit from the knowledge from ancient times.Mr Frawley,s Shiva,The Lord of Yoga surely seems to be one of the best. I am savoring each page, reading it slowly, and enjoying everything he has written. He gives very practical information with a deep understanding of the spiritual classics. A book that I will savor for a very long time ,and wish everyone could have a wonderful experience understanding the Nature of Lord Shiva and all the symbology therein, as Frawley so clearly presents.

A Guide To Self Realization
This book is twofold: first, it's the authors direct experience of Shiva (the divine, God, etc.) using words to describe to the best of his ability, and second, it's an instruction manual on how to begin where you are an start down a path of self realization.Imagine the vast ocean, full of many waves. Shiva is the ocean, and our body, mind, ego and etc are the waves. Most of us look at ourselves and our lives as the waves and ignore we are the ocean. This book is a guide to that realization.

You need direct experience
Much of the book won't make sense unless you have direct experience of Shiva.

No research value
The value of this book can be summed up by a quote from author Frawley on page 29 of his book: “Our concern in this book is not with semantics or history but with what could be better called ‘experiential spirituality’, which is what Yoga is really about.” In short, history and lingistic studies are of no concern in this book. Not a book for anyone searching for valid historical research on Shiva or Yoga.

Mindblowing
I am truly speechless with this book. Pandit Sashtri has so much knowledge that will put us native Indians to shame. I discussed with some of the points mentioned in the book with traditional brahmin preists and they had no clue about those things. They are just following what is taught to them without ever understanding the meaning behind it. It took a long for me to finish this book as it takes time to grasp what is written in the book..I am a fan of Dr Frawley :)

Exalted if unfocused
This book is more of an exalted hommage to Shiva than the more scholarly or straightforward book I was hoping for. Not that the book doesn't contain enough information about Shiva and related practices, it is sure chock-full of it, but the writing style is quite odd and at times confusing. The author writes in an exalted and stream-of-counsciousness style that can get quite meandering and unfocused. The goal is probably to arouse devotion in the reader, which is fine, but makes for a peculiar reading experience if one is not already an experienced devotee.

Complicated
Hmmm. As an Advaita Vedantist, I am perhaps not the right person to review this - but, gosh, it's so full of lore. As a compendium of Shaivite thought it seems pretty comprehensive and Mr Frawley has certainly had some far out experiences - for me, though, it was a little 'new agey' for my own taste ( you know, 'locate yourself in your sacred centre' type of thing ).I like simplicity and 'non-mystical' language. Look, if you're a Seeker, I'd go for 'Selfless Self' by Sri Ramakant Maharaj or the Astavakra or Avadhuta Gitas and forget all the 'five types of this and three types of that' busyness. But that's just me - I like things clear and straight.

We are the Children of the Realm of Shiva.Shakti
"Inner Voice" told me (when i was still in my teens) .....Worship Shiva.Shakti together....and the pages from the book that I read in present time contain exactly how my mind got trained to think in terms of Presence of Shiva.Shakti as all Levels of Existence that I became aware of over past >3 decades and took me through a plethora of experiences that consolidated what I came to learn in that process and regard.Reading this book (though I am still midway, I say that it) is like Revisiting my Lifetime of these Understandings and Experiences wrt Shiva.Shakti; having a lot of the "bingo points" that are in fact lined up like this "................................"Loving it.
