Works well.
This draw knife works very well to remove bark on smaller diameter pieces. It's well constructed and stays sharp. The rounded shape is better than the long flat style for my needs.

I used this after purchasing it and it worked great. However the shave tool came with a lot of small chips in the blade. It was sharp but these chips were not just felt by the bare hand but were big enough to see without looking hard. Prior to using this shave tool I decided to run a file over the blade to smooth out the chips and put a finished edge on it. This tool was easy to sharpen and worked really nice however I only gave it 4 stars because strait out of the box you shouldn't have to break out the file to straighten out an edge. The tool does come with a rudimentary rubber protector for edge retention during shipping so this must be how the finished product comes from the manufacturer.

Buy cheap and make it better
First off, the grind is incorrect for a drawknife. It's ground like a chisel and that WILL not work for shaving. Not flat (yes I know it's curved) on the bottom, but I know us woodworkers WILL understand that we can't have a truly sharp bevel without a flat back. So the First order of business was to flatten the bottom and reestablish a proper bevel and started polishing. There was so much paint on this thing that it takes a good while just to get to metal. Come to think of it, the entire blade was painted, so I don't know how that would cut after the first few uses. Oh, yeah, it would be hard if not for what I did. A rotary tool will speed this process up, and also to get rid of excess material. But you should always finish with stones. Also during the sharpening and polishing process oxidation was already evident on the bolts and nuts holding on the handles. In the end, I will make this tool better than how I got it. And for the price you can't beat that.

It’s a Good Knife
The handles are well shaped, and the blade was properly sharp upon delivery. As with all of my edged tools, I cleaned and sharpened it each day after use. I used the draw knife to remove the bark from several oak limbs. Some of the sharpness issues noted in other reviews may be due to technique, both with the tool and with the stone. Using a skewed slicing motion with each draw more easily removes material. After cleaning with 409 each day, I used a flat stone, oil, and circular motion on the bevel side with great sharpening results.

Quality tool if you tune it up
Imagine an 18th century Williamsburg cabinet-maker, carpenter or cooper who had this tool dropped off at their shop. They would be thrilled as that is how the village blacksmith would have made it at his local forge and foundry. It was then left up to the craftsman to fine tune the tool for work. Thus, this is a quality tool that requires a lot of milling with a few files, and then some serious sharpening with some diamond-embedded sharpening stones and emery paper. The work can be sped up with a grinder and power sander. For $30 I now have a nicely tuned tool that would cost me $150 from an European tool company. If you want to use this tool right out of the box, this is not the tool for you.

Vielseitiger Zughobel
