Another great Tommy Hambledon story
All of the Tommy Hambledon books by Manning Coles are excellent. I first read them in my teens and then periodically when I was looking for a good read. I am so glad to find them at last on Kindle. The very best ones are Drink to Yesterday and Toast to Tomorrow and I am avidly awaiting their appearance on the kindle list. Tommy has undergone numerous adventures from being an undercover agent before and during World War II to post war crime and espionage. The books are exciting and witty and most enjoyable.

An Out of Print Classic
Love the Manning Coles espionage novels, engaging writing, both witty and pragmatic. Yes, people frequently die, but the authors did not engage in drop-by-drop descriptions of blood and gore.Rue Morgue Press brought these novels back from obscurity, so sorry that the publisher went of business.

Not their best, but still Manning Coles.
This isn't the best Tommy Hambedon, but it's Tommy, and has some memorable moments, and excellent writing. The real problem is the Rue Morgue Press, which doesn't believe in proof readers. The "one" for "once" type thing is bad enough, but the partial sentence transpositions will stop you cold while you figure it out. It's really annoying.

Among those absent
Published originally in 1948 this is straight story telling with the wry sort of humor I enjoy. Unfortunately most of the Tommy Hambledon stories are out of print although Rue Morgue Press has reprinted some of them. Written by a male and female duo this is an interesting peek into the times and life pre and post war in England with adventure thrown in. The super spy becomes a criminal in order to solve a mystery with His Majesty's Prisons. With violence a little more to the fore than usual (although always a background theme) Tommy goes flying, hiding, boating and as always, succeeding in his endeavours. For those who like a straight tale and an easy read.

A Good Read
Engaging plot, typos, but very affordable so no problem.

Manning Coles at his (their) best!
If you have ever read any of the Tommy Hambledon mysteries by the Manning Coles duo, you must read this one! If you wonder who Tommy Hambledon is, read this one first to find out! British wit, suspense, and wonderful dialogue make AMONG THOSE ABSENT a joy to read and very hard to put down!

Vacation Turns Into Adventure
Tommy Hambledon, Manning Coles delightful British spy, takes a busman's holiday to Sweden and ends up traveling across Europe investigating mysterious activities of no-good characters. This is one of the most humorous books I've read by Coles, and I found myself laughing out loud in bed after midnight, because I couldn't put it down.

Recipient likes the book!
This book was a gift to someone who had read many of this author's books many years ago. She reports that it is just as enjoyable now as it was back in the 50s or 60s. She very glad these books are back in print.
