Laverne & Shirley In The Army

A great classic by two of the Great icons Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams
I've always been a big fan of Laverne & Shirley but when they turned themselves into animated for the role in the animated cartoon Laverne and Shirley in the army I just had to have it I didn't know that they had made an animated cartoon of themselves when I was looking on Amazon and seeing if they had it for sale I just had to have it and I bought it and now that I got it I am very pleased and excited that I got it it is a great animated cartoon was it on very long only two seasons but what I do get to watch is a great set

A Commanding Pig?
Based on the army episode with Vicki Lawrence, these are the antics of Laverne and Shirley with their commanding pig Sgt. Squeaky (the late Ron Pallio).Though not as interesting as Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, these episodes were pretty good for it's time. Funny thing is, when the actual army episode aired, Laverne and Shirley were now in the Sixties, so you have to expect some anachronisms in the cartoon, such as the Rocket into Space episode. As well as ABC mocking their other series. The Greatest American Hero, where an alien gives a super suit to Laverne and Shirley to fight off an intergalactic threat. All in all, this was one of the better animated adaptations Hanna-Barbera Studios had produced, since the episodes managed keeping the chemistry with Laverne and Shirley. For collectors of lost Saturday Mornings, I recommend this collection. My only regret is CBS Video won't release it digitally on their channel.

L&S ITA Review
Not all that impressed with series. I can say it is better than Fonzie & the happy days gang, but the premise could have done without a talking pig as a seargent in the army. And Ron Palillo was not the best choice for the voice of the pig. It just does not seem right. Squiggy would have been a lot better as L&S's seargent. It just looked like this series was rushed with not a lot of thought behind it, just to get it out there. F&THDG was even worse. I think Gary Marshall just wanted something put on thevair waves. Quality did not seem to be a high priority back then.

"A Commanding Pig?"
After the box-office success of Private Benjamin in 1980, it seemed that women-in-the-military were the "in" thing on TV. The movie was adapted into a CBS sitcom on Monday nights. Popeye's girlfriend Olive Oyl and her friend Alice the Goon joined the ranks on CBS Saturday mornings in 1981 the same time this series premiered. This was one of the last Saturday morning cartoons I watched faithfully. By the 1982-83 season I had begun High School and started pursuing other interests. The "live-action" Laverne and Shirley had already done an Army stint on their prime time show seasons earlier with Vicki Lawrence as their domineering Sergeant, but the voice-casting of Ron Palillo ("Welcome Back Kotter's" Arnold Horshack) as a commanding pig was inspired. The second season suffered from the loss of Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams, who were no longer doing the voice-overs. I bought this more for the nostalgia factor than anything else and can only take these vintage cartoons in limited doses. They certainly play better when you're 12 than when you're 50!! The audio isn't the greatest on these MOD discs, but this set is nice to have for those with fond memories of the show.
