Anaesthesia and the Practice of Medicine: Historical Perspectives

This book won't put you to sleep and you don't have to be a med school graduate to understand it. I particularly like the way it is organized. Instead of a purely chronological review, the chapters are organized by key components of anesthesia science and practice. The end of each chapter includes references and so while the book is a great cover-to-cover read, it is also an excellent reference.While we are all well aware of the importance of the surgeon's skill, this book will help you appreciate the importance and skill the anesthetist brings to surgery. I think you'll also get some insight as to why health care costs are rising, and it isn't simply "what the market will bear."This a wonderful book for people interested in medical history or would simply like to learn how anesthesia helped make medical advances possible.

I would highly recommend this book. The author spends just enough time on all the major discoveries in anesthesia without excessive details that make many books like this drag. The first 75% of the book is a real page turner. The last quarter doesn't have the same type of interesting stories and seemed hurried. Overall, I was very happy and learned a lot. 2 thumbs up!

I bought this book because I thought that I ought to own it. I am an anesthesiologist so it seemed like the sort of volume that should sit on my shelf. I started reading it idlely and find it to be fascinating. I learned a great deal about my own specialty and I found the writing to clear and sprightly. It is a pleasant way to become better acquainted with the anesthetic roots of the modern practice of medicine.

This is a very easy to read book that summarizes the historical landmarks that shaped the practice of anesthesia. It does not go into great detail on any single event or person, but does summarize the big picture.

Interesting to learn about the subject from a non-technical perspective. Fun to learn that the specialty is relatively new and quickly developed from simple beginnings.
