City Hunter Shinjuku Private Eyes

Good return to form for the Stallion of Shunjuku!
This movie came out in Japan in Feb. 2019 and was released in July 2020 for the US. Wow It feels weird to watch CH in widescreen HD and 5.1 sound. I watched primarily the Jpn 5.1 track , and then tried the other 3 to see if there were sound problems. All 4 played well. The dialogue was fine.Picture quality was gorgeous. The nostalgic songs being used throughout the film was ace.I was impressed with the extras. Usually anime doesnt have many extras, but the 30 minute panel was great as was the interview with Mr Suwa. The film itself was good. Id say of the OVA/movies 1997 Goodbye MY Sweetheart and 1989 Magnum of Love and Fate are better than this, but this was better than Secret Service and 1999 Death of Evil Ryo.Pros:Art/animation. Saeko isnt as busty , but otherwise they look great. the CG didnt stick out that much. Some decent action, especially the drone stuff in the park.Nostalgic songsThe use of technology made it seem currentThe end credit recreation of classic scenes from the Tv show!Jpn voice cast is excellent as always! Eng cast is solid.ConsDue to the plot, there are long stretches where Ryo and Kaori are not onscreen together and the film drags a bit.Ai , the main girl, isnt as endearing as other CH girls and I wish she played more of a part in the climax. (IMO)Misc:It was werd to see song subtitles in the upper left corner especially during climactic moments: Its not bad, but a little distractingThe Eng cast is good. While I mostly watch Jpn for CH, I began watching the old ADV eng dub in the late 90s for the ova/movies. I like Discoteks Saeko more, but I feel the Omibozu actor should be deeper/gravelly. Kaori is a bit too feminine.Discotek Ryo is better than ADV for serious parts, but I wish he was a bit more manic during the "mokkori" scenes like his English predecessor.I'm eternally grateful that the Eng dub has all the names intact though.7.5/10Film : 7.5/10Disc production/quality: 9/10

Great Movie for Fans and Non-fans Alike
Recommended for City Hunter fans and non-fans alike.I can't say anything great about the story because it's quite the anime cliché -- the bullied good kid turned bad, the forgotten childhood friend, the dad who, like, really didn't abandon his family, the confused young girl, etc... But the movie as a whole was quite enjoyable. The drawings do disappoint at times. You would think they would put a little more budget behind a successful show such as City Hunter. And yet we get these mediocre drawings and animation at times -- my apologies to hard working artists. The work was definitely rushed at times. Now, we love City Hunter for its excellent music and I am happy to say they played all the good ones in this movie. I wished they used some of them in the action scenes like in the anime. They did get the ending frame right with the Get Wild music though.I have come to not like the word fan-service. It's like having artists working for us instead of expressing themselves. So I don't want to call the various nod to City Hunter and Cat's Eye fans a fan-service. They even brought in the Cat's Eye girls, OMG! Talk about anime cross-over.Other tidbits. Ryo was protrayed as a martial artist with some impressive moves. Ryo and Kaori moved to a more modern apartment building. They tried to make the girl from the last episode of City Hunter appear at the end of this movie. But that was odd because the movie was set in a much more modern era.

A great addition to the City Hunter franchise
A great addition to the City Hunter franchise, updated for the modern age but still with the 80s style that made it so fun. In the course of the movie we hear most of the themes used in the original three seasons, especially "Wild n Tough."I look forward to getting the original series on bluray when the price comes down and complete season sets are listed in Region A,

Great but audio seems a little off
Audio seems lower especially in the special feature premiere.

Cheeky Fun.
Entertaining romp and enjoyable characters once they act a little more mature.

XYZ
Perfect way to bring the classic XYZ to modern standards. Really enjoyed how they took things from different parts of the tv series and incorporated it into this modern classic.

Fun winks and nods to the original
It's not pushing any boundaries or expanding the genre - it's a fun little fanservice-y flick to satisfy your City Hunter needs.
