STAR WARS VOL. 1: THE DESTINY PATH

Marvel, You Can Do Better. I mean, this is STAR WARS!
The art is ...meh. It's OK. It's not great. It's not inspiring. The writing, too, is ...meh. I've read worse. It's got so much potential, but it disappoints me.The book picks up on the tails of The Empire Strikes Back. That's good. Luke is in a state of shock. Vader has just chopped off Luke's hand and told the young Jedi that Vader is his father. That part is done well. But then....We go back to cloud city. Luke wants is lightsaber.C'mon. Been there, done that. Boring. I remember when the original Marvel from the 1970's did a few issues on Bespin. That was cool. Now, it's old hat.Leia gets put into carbon freeze, just days after Han. Luke searches for his lightsaber in a large Trash Compactor-type room. Luke wants his X-Wing back.Where's the creativity? GIVE US SOMETHING NEW! This feels like a re-tread.This is not a book that will keep you up at night, flipping pages, making you want to read it again. We all know that about a year's time goes by between the end of The Empire Strikes Back and the start of Return of the Jedi. This series is going to fill in that year and tell us what the Star Warriors were doing. It's just that--the story to me feels redundant, and it feels false when Luke traces down an image from a Force Vision rather than going after his best friend, Han. Heck, in TESB, Luke left his all-important training to go save Leia and Han at Cloud City. Now, something else is more important?I don't buy it.Marvel needs to do better.

quite good
This takes place at the end of Empire Strikes back. It picks up right after Leia and Lando pick up Luke after his near-fatal fight with Darth Vader. We see how Lando becomes a real rebel, Leia's love for Han, and Luke's struggle with the revelation that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker. The art is really good. The dialogue is strong and the plot is nicely thought out. Star Wars fans will love this.

Comic Book to help introduce Star Wars
Read this with my 6 yo son. He loved the art, loved the story, didn’t want to put it down. I felt like he was really engaged in this story because of the visuals. He wanted to know more about each character as they were introduced.

A great jumping-on point
This is a great restart of the series. It takes heavy advantage of the events of The Empire Strikes Back, and feels like an appropriate extension of the story.

A solid launch to a new "Star Wars."
Over the last few years, Charles Soule has pulled off a bit of a magic trick, gradually transforming from one of Marvel’s more shrug-worthy “Star Wars” writers (think “Poe Dameron,” Obi-Wan and Anakin”), into one of their all-star storytellers (“Lando, “Darth Vader,” “The Rise of Kylo Ren”). Now, Mr. Soule – following in the footsteps of Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, and Greg Pak – has been handed the keys to Marvel’s flagship “Star Wars” series, and – shocker – it’s pretty much a home run.Picking up in the immediate aftermath of “The Empire Strikes Back,” Soule’s “Star Wars” finds our core cast of characters in various states of distress and/or personal crises, making for fertile storytelling soil that is compelling and – best of all – immediately distinct from its predecessors. Granted, a few story elements still fall into the “wait-and-see” side of things – Luke’s storyline is particular feels a bit at-odds with what’s been set up in the films – but on the whole, this is a new “Star Wars” series that feels both fresh and well-honed.Welcome to the big boys club, Charles Soule.

An Exciting First Volume
I enjoyed this a lot! The book collects the first 6 issues of Charles Soule’s Star Wars run. I really liked his Vader series and he’s written a fun and intense post-ESB story. It was great seeing Luke struggle as he came to terms with who his father is and there were awesome moments when he overcame the doubt and confusion to continue on his journey to badass Jedi hero. I really liked seeing a familiar face from the previous Vader volumes as well and R2 got his own little hero moment. This was a fun read and I’m looking forward to the next volume.

A solid beginning
Vol 1 of this new run from Charles Soule follows on from Empire Strikes Back, and it's off to a good start. Lando adds his own brand of humour to the group, and the post-Bespin changes to how certain characters act is intriguing to see. Luke struggles with what he learned, Leia juggles searching for Han with leading the alliance, and Vader is determined to capture his son. The artwork is great, thankfully. The last few volumes of the previous run was hampered by poor artwork, but no such problems here. Charles Soule is arguably the best comic book writer in Star Wars at the moment (his Vader series was excellent), and he continues that in this series too. The previous run of the main Star Wars series was hit or miss, and while we'll have to see how this one goes, so far it's definitely a hit.

Une très bonne suite à l'Empire Contre-attaque
Cette histoire vise à combler ce qui se passe entre l'Empire contre-attaque et le Retour du Jedi.Et il y parvient superbement. Vivement le tome suivant !
