Read the book, cast the runes and then make your own
This book and set came out in 1983. They were given to me by my Grandmother when I was 13 and I've read them since then. Mostly for myself and a few close friends. Sometime after that I heard Mr. Blum talk about them in the basement of a small book store in Minneapolis. After that I made my own set from white clay. Consider this your starter set.The the book is the "bible" because the integration of ancient wisdom is amazing. They have been such a strong influence on my life. I purchased this set for my roommate, who is 74 and very curious about them. I left her alone to learn on her own, just like I did. Next summer we are going to walk down the arroyo and pick up enough stones for each of us to make a set. The reason that I have read the runes for over 35 years is because they simply take you out of your situation and see it from a different perspective. The daily rune is something everyone should do. A rune journal is also a great way to keep record of your journey. There are so many ways to integrate the runes into your life.

Added to my collection.....
The myths, tales, songs that come down to us from this ancient culture in surviving bits and pieces were part of a spoken tradition passed down through the generations, probably suppressed and squashed as subsequent cultures/languages came and went before written language was the norm. ( I credit the Romans for wiping out those pre-Christian cultures) That means most of what we "know" about the Runes is based on historical/anthropological research by "experts" , personal opinions/bias, New Age shill craft and plain old whimsy. This just seems to support the notion the ancient past doesn't have the corner on Seeing and Oracles, which makes the Runes alive and fascinating to me! . A friend had this little book and I enjoyed the interpretations for the runes which were different from the interpretations in the other books I had. Also this set of stones had an extra stone, a blank stone (with an interpretation) and the Ingwaz stone looks different in this set...one x on top of another instead of the box they create at their center. Blum's presentation of the stones is also ordered differently. It is a small book, physically and content wise, concise and to the point. While all the interpretations were loosely the same as in other books, Blum has a way of verbally illustrating the symbolism which proved more understandable to me. I am happy to have it in my library!

Perfect
I've had this set for 30 years, it was a gift from my mother when I went out on my own at 20. It has guided me my entire adult life. I purchased this set for my daughter.Yes, the stones are rough, gritty ceramic when new. With use and rubbing around together in the bag they smooth out beautifully. I have always loved the textures and sound of them mixing around when I choose one.The book is outstanding and I'm so glad I have found it still in print. I have a small pewter set I carry with me, but this set is akin to that old soft tee shirt that is your absolute favorate item. They just get better with time, use and wear.We took very fine sandpaper to the rough edges and now they are on their way to becoming her touch stones that will help guide her through life.

Good self-help book, poor Rune book.
Firstly, yes, the book comes with runes, which I didn't need or want. I wondered why there were no photos of them on the product page? They are horrible to handle... Made from ceramic (which one may assume would be smooth?), although of good size and substance, feel like handling rough chalk... Horrible on my fingers, horrible to pluck one out of the bag. I'll stick with my lusciously smooth black obsidian stones, thank you very much. The ceramic ones needed to be disposed of, unfortunately.Runes aside, the book, which is what I wanted....Firstly, a great little self-help book (which I didn't want) for being introspective and finding a positive path of getting to know oneself better. Really not what I wanted or was expecting...As a Book of Runes or Runelore and mythos and history and authentic spiritual interpretation, truly dismal. The interpretations are so basic and, ironically enough, soulless, there is no opportunity to explore the cultural meaning or significance behind each one.And for goodness sake, the runes aren't even presented in traditional Futhark order... simply the order the author "discovered" them during his organic experience of coming to know them.Literally half of this book is useless to me, and incredibly disappointing. So what about the other half? Yes, there's some refreshing thinking and new perspectives, which will become useful to me no doubt in the future. Also, the book itself is quite physically lovely, with thick pages and a tidy golden embossment on a cloth cover. Lovely little book, just wish the content was more suitable for me!It's a good self-help book, in particular because the author was clearly trying to help himself with them, and basically tell his story of exploration and discovery.Just not for me, I'm afraid.

Great book, disappointing stones
I read this book before and thought it was a great guide and introduction to runes and the old copy came with lovely tactile clay rune stones! This edition came with very nasty chalky flat cheap feeling stones! This being the 25th anniversary issue was such a shame as I thought rather than improving it had actually down valued!

Same great publication..but runes have changed
I was really glad to finally get this book, having fond memories of this classic. However slightly disappointed that I didn't get those smooth pebbley runes that I knew. These runes don't have the same feeling. They are white, sharp edged and feel rough to the touch. Missing that tactile comfort of the old set. However always was a classic on runes, and the white book is prettier..after Tolkien maybe
