Scientific AnglersAmplitude Smooth Trout Fly Line with AST Plus

Smooth Not As Good
I actually ordered this by mistake and returned it. Amazon did not offer the textured version I was after so I bought it elsewhere. I thought I'd write a review about the textured version here anyway to help anyone trying to decide between the two. Both versions cast well but the textured version casts farther and with more speed and energy. The textured surface reduces friction by creating a smaller line-guide contact surface area and I'm convinced this reduces drag, increases line speed and yields longer casts. I also believe the increased line speed along with the resulting tighter loop reduces the adverse effect of wind.Although the smooth version floats higher than any previous line I've had, I also believe the textured version floats higher still. I don't know why, but maybe the recessed parts of the texture gather air? Anyway higher floatation improves visibility, makes mending easier, makes the pickup to recast quieter, and reduces water friction on the pickup to recast resulting in a cleaner first backcast which in turn means fewer false casts. The textured surface does not bother my fingers, and I got used to the noise it makes passing through the guides with my previous SA "Sharkskin" line.Anyway, I think the Amplitude Series of lines represents a quantum leap in flyline technology!
