Pieter Bruegel

Revisiting Bruegel
This book by Larry Silver will be an immediate hit, at least among art's lovers. It has been translated in french and the effort of the french publisher CITADELLES & MAZENOD to realize a true wonder has been achieved thanks to their care and to the superb work of scholarship. The American edition by Abbeville Press conveys the purity of the language as well as the details of the printing into a reference text. The entire life and work of Pieter Bruegel is explored, no exception for early and late paintings or prints or drawings. Despite two dense monographs published almost two decades ago and a great book on prints and drawings by Nadine M. Orenstein this superlative work is difficult to match. The text is subtle, pervasive and original. Exceptionally documented and profound: the images are capturing all the nuances of the original works thanks to a superlative printing process. When a work of erudition is not limited by the quality of the images authentic masterpieces can be produced. And this book is itself a work of art. Prints have been captured in color, not in B&W, resulting rich in tone and magnificent to the eyes. The work of Dr. Silver has touched many subjects, ranging from Bosch to Dürer, dissecting aspect of Renaissance art that open new areas of study. There are books that deserve all the stars of the sky and this new book on Bruegel is a revelation.

Some details missing
An earlier reviewer pointed out the problem of the missing picture in this book but since then nobody has commented on it. I thought it was high time somebody else did.Chapter I is entitled 'God in the Details' but ironically a number of the details referred to are not illustrated because the main photograph of the painting in question ('Christ Carrying the Cross') is quite heavily cropped. I have subsequently inserted my own printed copy of the painting into the book, but do-it-yourself-editing in a book this expensive was not quite what I had in mind when I purchased it.Otherwise the text and the illustrations are of a high quality but never quite redeem this curious editing lapse.

Gorgeous feast for the eyes
It is a real treat to see so many full sized reproductions of the paintings - the colour is great and the detail is enormous - i see something new each time I flip...the text gets away from the pictures sometimes , but thats more likely me being too eager to see more.. I love it even more than Larry Silvers one on Bosch. This is one of the books to grab if the house is on fire , or on the way to the hospital when you break a leg and have to sit still....

Outstanding
I can only echo the great review given by Covacci Antonio, bravo!. This is such a wonderfully done book in both materials and presentation, as well as scholarly exposition. I was so impressed with the whole work I ordered a copy of his Bosch book and can't wait to get it!Simply put, if you are a fan of Bosch or Bruegel, Larry Silver's books are a must.

A Feast for the Eyes
I haven't yet read the text, but I would very much like to comment on the reproductions of Bruegel paintings and drawings in the book: they are as numerous as they are excellent, page after page of complete paintings as well as close-up details. Very-very impressive. I would also highly recommend Larry Silver's "Hieronymus Bosch" published by Abbeville. Both are outstanding art books.

essential, worth the cost
Expensive, but gorgeous. It's on my coffee table now and everyone's eyes are drawn to it. Lovely for any fan of P. Bruegel, Flemish art ... I love Tolkien and this helps re-create the Middle Earth concept, Medeival and Renaissance-era life in Europe.

Impressive...
A *huge* book, very hard to read without a library table - but well worth the effort! While the illustrations - especially the enlargements - are very good indeed, the text is equally impressive. Altogether this is undoubtedly the definitive book on Bruegel; and well worth saving up for!
