Galen Rowell: A Retrospective

A gorgeous retrospective of Galen Rowell's photography by the editors of Sierra Club Books. More than 175 beautifully reproduced photographs anchor the retrospective, accompanied by limited, tightly edited, but very informative text that enhance each image. Love it.

I bought this for a friend who was an avid outdoorsman, now trapped at home due to surgery. The pictures are great. The late Galen Rowell was a world-renouned photographer, with much of his work appearing in National Geographic. Much of the photography is of the Eastern Sierra Nevada in CA, and in and around Yosemite. He takes ordinary scenes and waits for the right combination of light, shadow and weather to craft not just a photo, but art. Yet the pictures are real, not digitially modified (at least not to my knowledge). A beautiful book of God's Creation.

This book contains over 200 color photographs in a coffee table style book that anyone would be proud to own.It describes the life of the author and the quality of the pictures is first class.Buy it in very good or better condition as I did to make sure the books condition will be sure and show the photographs in perfect condition.I really love this book.

This is a beautiful book, and it’s condition was as described (it was used). Buying it used was a substantial saving.It also arrived on time!

If there wold be more material in there, I would give a five stars. Great pictures, good printing. Subject is candy. Interesting life.

Galen Rowell is an extraordinary photographer with considerable talent.The lengths he went to for his images impresses me greatly.Beautiful photographs and fascinating text. A must purchase for all landscape photographers.

Die vielen guten Bewertungen auf der amerikanischen Amazon-Seite kann ich leider nicht bestätigen.Positiv: Das Buch enthält einige sehr gute und sehr eindrucksvolle Bilder.Negativ:- Einige der eindrucksvollen Bilder sind beeindruckend aufgrund ihrer knallbunten Farben, aber Motiv und Bildaufbau halten das Auge des Betrachters nicht lange fest und man hat sich schnell daran satt gesehen.- Das Buch zeigt viel zu viele Fotos aus dem Familienalbum des Fotografen, die mich nicht im Geringsten interessieren.- Das Buch zeigt viel zu viele Fotos von Kletterern auf irgendwelchen Berggipfeln, einschließlich des Fotografen; diese Fotos mögen für Kletterfreaks interessant sein, geben aber fotografisch nicht viel her.- Einige Bilder sind durch die Verwendung von Grauverlaufsfiltern, die zu stark und/oder falsch positioniert sind, verdorben.- Bei mindestens einem Bild ist der Bildaufbau aufgrund eines leeren Vordergrunds missraten. Das würde man jedem Fotografenlehrling um die Ohren hauen.- Die vielen Texte über die Kletterei von Galen Rowell interessieren mich persönlich nicht und sind bezüglich der Fotografie nicht im Geringsten inspirierend.In den 70-er und 80-er Jahren mögen die Fotos beeindruckt haben. Galen Rowell im Buchtext mit Altmeistern wie Ansel Adams gleichzustellen, ist aber völlig unpassend. Während die Fotos von Ansel Adams zeitlose Meisterwerke sind, passen die Fotos von Galen Rowell nicht mehr in die heutige Zeit, da die Fotografie sich in den letzten 20 Jahren stark weiterentwickelt hat.

Estupenda retrospectiva del trabajo de Rowell que muestra un buen número de sus mejores fotografías. El libro está organizado en 10 capítulos principales que describen sus diferentes facetas y trabajos y agrupan fotografías relacionadas con cada una: cómo comenzó a fotografiar mientras escalaba, expediciones, conservación, la Eastern Sierra en la última etapa...Es un libro creado tras su muerte (el texto no es suyo). Contiene un artículo por cada capítulo escrito por diferentes personas que lo conocieron y/o trabajaron con él y se lee bien (está muy bien redactado, entretiene casi como los propios textos de Rowell).
