I certainly would rate him among the beloved environmentalist in your nations history. His books are wonderful to read as you feel that you are right in the center of the story every minute. It will bring a tear to your eye at times but also joy in your heart as you read about their life time journey . All of his books are worth waiting for but this one is special. Wildlife science with a human touch
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. This is the second book in a series starting with the initial re-introduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park and continues with the story about one of the most interesting and dynamic packs in the park, the Druids. In typical McIntyre fashion, the story weaves its way through the lineages of wolves that eventually compose one of the largest wolf packs, the Druids. The Druid pack has a long and interesting history in Yellowstone. The interactions of the pack members and especially Wolf 21 is chronicled over the long reign of the Druids. As if one is sitting around a campfire, Rick tells the stories of the Druids with the accuracy and understanding of one who has watched wolves for most of his adult life.

If you are interested in wolf behavior or the reintroduction to Yellowstone, this is a must read.
The author knows the wolves of Yellowstone. He was a first-hand witness of many of the milestones since the introduction and probably one of the most familiar with the wolves themselves.Fascinating stories.Appreciate that he has put so much time into these wolves and the enjoyment of them for the many visitors of Yellowstone, who are lucky enough to see them. From what little I know, to see so many wolves at once, as is often seen in these packs, is almost unheard of in the world at large.I have been lucky enough to have seen the Junction pack in 2019, 2020, and 2021, where I have seen at least 29 wolves at once. It's incredible to see.It reminds me of the time we saw 8 cheetah cubs together at the St Louis zoo - one of the best zoos in the world. Not very many people have seen those kinds of numbers together and it is something I am appreciative of.If you haven't been to Yellowstone, it's a must. In the last 6 months, we have seen: the wolf packs, black and grizzly or brown bears, elk, bison, pronghorn, snowshoe rabbits, fox, coyotes, mountain sheep and goats, moose, eagles (both golden and bald), deer, and other waterfowl.

Heroic. 6 stars.
Six stars! By far the most detailed and up close/ personal descriptions of wolves over a long time period. Written in a very readable way, with just enough of the author’s reflections to stop it from being “dry,” without being self indulgent.A monumental achievement of dedication over decades. The Rise of Wolf 8, same author, should be read first and is AT LEAST as good!Film documentaries focus on the hunting and fighting, perhaps because they are often more out in the open, or maybe to sensationalize. This book captures the intimate and devoted behaviors of raising and caring wolf families, which are often harder to film, being near the den. This book is, and the Wolf 8 book, are real page turners.Minimal political aspects. Just an homage to the lives of wolves. Can you imagine trying to kill prey that is eight times your size with your mouth, ducking potentially lethal kicks, then trotting ten miles back to your children to regurgitate what you ate, for them to eat. Then returning to the carcass and another twenty mile round trip to get more for your family? Such courage and devotion. Wolves 9,8,42,21 and others live on in our hearts and memories. Photo is wolf 21 in later years. A role model for us all.

Beautifully Written, Emotionally Powerful
This is no mere "scientific journal" or dry report, this a is a beautifully written, lyrical book about one man's encounter over many years with not just wolves - but one wolf and a brave, beautiful, wise wolf at that. The author has devoted thousands and thousands of hours to observing wolves in Yellowstone Park since their controversial re-introduction there and this book is a tribute to the immense importance of that re-introduction and its impact upon the entire Yellowstone eco-system. But more than that, it is a tribute to need for, the necessity for respect for every single living being on this planet. We are not alone. No this planet does not belong solely man and that we must remember - always.

very exciting, very entertaining book series
I previously have read Wolf 8, then immediately ordered Wolf 21, and look forward to the third in the series.I have never seen a wolf in the wild, only in the AK Zoo. When I walked by the cage of a group of wolves, one starred at me, I starred back---he/she seemed very sad!

MANAGE MAN NOT WILDLIFE
Great read if you love wolves. The wolf haters I. This life should educate themselves more about wolves to understand they hunt to eat and feed themselves and their pack(family. They are not all what they get portrayed as in movies back in the day. We need to MANAGE MAN NOT WILDLIFE!!! The wolves play a vital role to our ecosystem being Native American they are spiritual to me and I love them!! They are hunted and killed by trophy hunters and hunters whom are wolf haters and ranchers who see no reason at all for wolves. Ranching is a big money making business so of course ranchers want all wolves exterminated. These are the ones that pay big bucks for the hunters to kill as many wolves as possible by any means. Wyoming,Montana and Idaho are all states that kill wolves whenever they want. They don’t care if it’s a Yellowstone wolf all they get is a mere slap on the wrist. It’s so wrong the wolves need to be back on the endangered species list for sure!!!!

Kept my attention throughout the whole book
If you are a wolf lover, then you will love this book written by a wolf lover. Wolf 21 existed in Yellowstone before I moved near the park, so I didn't get to see him "in person". But this book took me there. I absolutely fell in love with 21. A must read for any animal lover. I really couldn't put it down until I was done reading the whole book in it's entirety.
