A War Story Worth Reading
Lt. Todd Ingram is a likable leader who faces overwhelming odds to escape from Japanese-controlled Philippines and keep his small crew safe. Often the odds are against him, leading to intriguing solutions to seemingly impossible circumstances. The characters are realistic. Not being familiar with a ship’s terminology for equipment sent me to seek definitions, so, not only did the book make for good reading, I learned.

Great WW2 story.
Well written story set in the pacific during WW2. It details one of the many difficult times of the war. A time that stretched the limits of men and women engaged in this time of extreme difficulty and death. Lest we forget the heros that fought for our freedom.

The ACE Escapes
This is the first novel I have read by Mr. Gobbell and it will not be the last. Todd Ingram's fighting and then escape from Corregidor is only one part of this fine WW 2 novel. His island hopping and many adventures from Corregidor to Australia is rest of the story. There is plenty of action, a love story, an elusive Nazi spy, an evil monster dressed as an educated human, and also much war heartache, loss, and sadness. In this novel you can smell the cordite, feel the shell blasts, feel the heat from the explosions, see the hopelessness, and hear the cries of pain and sadness. You can also watch Todd grow in experience and decision making. However, he did lose his focus at times because of his first feelings of true love. Todd is well trained, but he still has much to learn. Major Otis Dewitt is an especially good counterpoint to Mr Ingram and it is fun to watch the banter back and forth between the two. In addition, we are introduced in the novel to some very interesting Philippine nationals who fight and die very hard. All in all, I really enjoyed the story and look forward to the further adventures of Todd Ingram

Fun read.
If you're interested in the Pacific campaigns of WWII, there's not much to dislike about this read. The history is accurate for the most part, and the author gets his numerous characters in parallel adventure limes, then brings them together in imaginative ways.. There are perhaps too many characters and and too many typos in my Kindle edition, but it's a great read and a real page-turner. I look forward to the next six Todd Ingram books. He's due for a promotion after his exploits in The Last Lieutenant.

A Good WWII Adventure Story
The novel starts a little slow, but continues to build. The confusing details at the start of the novel give way to action and development of the characters.

incredible book
Such a great read. Couldn’t put it down. Felt like I was there in Corigidor. I’m a sailor and loved every moment of the men on the 51 boats. Great suspense and escape. My heart was in my throat with the pain. Time after time the Japanese were there. I loved Ingram and Helen and Amador. Such heroic characters. And what villains! Thank you so much for such a remarkable tale.

A truly super Book. Do not miss it!
The last Lieutenant (021222) Had to read the first two or three chapters again to get the gist of what was going on. Even now a bit puzzled with an enemy in the midst of our hero’s situation but the story has got me riveted, so keen to stay with it. At 14% I am real glad that I did, it is not only educational but a first class drama mystery. At (21%) this has just not stopped being a thrill a minute, absolutely super read. At 34% it looks as if it is all over for our hero and what a passage he has had and what a story! The trouble with this book is that it is impossible to put it down!(35%). The harrowing events depicted in these chapters, in that part of the world during the war, are simply horrific and leaves on feeling quite disturbed (39%). It is quite impossible for me to sum up my experience of the last section, here. (48%). Tight with exciting dialogue and numerous events it just kept me locked to every sentence. What a blow our heroine has been caught and it is not pretty. (51%). So locked into this exciting book that I have missed an urgent appointment (61%) ! Oh My God! (77%) Putting this quite simply, this is a book not to be missed. As a non US reader it was a bit difficult at times but worth every bit of effort. I heartily recommend it

You couldn’t imagine what they went through...
but they knew what was coming and chose fight. They had no real choice. The human body can be physically resilient, tough and can take a pounding, but is the human mind as resilient? Surrounded, ammunition and supplies depleted and yet they fought. You have to read this in order to get a hint of an idea what these men and women went through. Action, tension, human nature, greed, and to top it off, SPIES.

A novel based on actual events of WW2
The book was very hard to follow in its early chapters, characters were confusing, ultimately they became clearer. The basis of the novel is the surrender of the Phillipines to the invading Japanese forces during WW2, the facts presented were enlightening for a little known portion of this conflict, (losses were not emphasised to maintain morale). The main character became a little unbelievable as the number of near misses, escapes from captivity, whilst all was destroyed around him, plus his love interest story was quite unrealistic. All in all a simpler version could have told the story just as well.

Ripe for a TV series or film
This is an entertaining and realistic ( sometimes brutally so) story of a part of WW2 that was unknown to me. The descriptions of the sea journeys are particularly good and should appeal to anyone who loves the sea. The characters are well-drawn and there seems to have been excellent research of actual events around which the story evolves. It is a bit long, which detracts from the full award. However, it bodes well for the next volumes of the story. It would make a good film along the lines of Band of Brothers/ Saving Private Ryan.
