I took delivery of the Esse5 plain edge OD w sheath just yesterday. First Impressions are important. Mine are all over the top - WOWSERS !I've got a dozen or so other knives - this is the most expensive. And, of course, clearly the best.I read all the Q&As and Reviews, here and on the other Esse5s here on Amazon, so was prepared to see a good product. Got tired of all the "Beast" comments. But - it really is a heavy duty knife! I've got other 5"ers but this one is twice as massive. The coating is perfect - like what they spray on a pickup truck bed, not a spray-on paint job. Looks like it will be around for 2 or 3 generations. The micarta handle is great. Some have written that it is rough on your hands, will take of skin. Not so. Unless you have baby soft skin hands and use it for an hour or so trying to cut down trees. Comfortable to my medium sized hands. I've made a dozen or so knives, focused on making sure the scales are comfortable - so I'm sure I'll not have to ever "Make or Buy" to replace these. The Sheath - also Top Notch. Has a little safety slide to prevent the knife being pulled out by someone who shouldn't. But the sheath is strong/tight enough that the knife wouldn't fall out if you jumped off a roof with the knife/sheath upside down.Only word of caution - if you plan on getting a TechLok to use to attach to this sheath (so you can attach it to a belt or strap in a manner different than the provided steel spring clip allows) - the hTech-Lok holes won't line up with the holes in the Esse sheath. So, you'll have to drill a hole or two in something.I would not classify this knife as being designed for 'self-protection'. It is perfectly balanced and comfortable - but still heavy. I don't think it's practical as a concealed every day carry for tactical purposes. But - it was clearly NOT DESIGNED exclusively for that. It is an all-round, functional, 'survival' knife. " ....If I could only have one...." type of knife - that will cut large branches, baton, feather, gut and skin and - yes - perform admirably in case of a need to defend yourself. Few want to carry 3 knives - so this is the one you would grab if you felt you had to do 'all of the above".

I firmly believe this knife will withstand about anything. At first before arrival, I was concerned about the thickness of the blade .25" its the thickest of my many knives. the handle is large enough for the biggest hands, and the surface offers a sure, no slip grip. The handle is porous like leather, so l applied mink oil, darkening it to an even olive color and sealing it much like you would a pair of fine leather boots. I agree this knife is generational, your great grand son will be glad for it. Good job Esee. And the Kydex sheath is awesome. Light, but strong, when attaching it to the clip I recommend attaching it closer to the tip, for a shorter overall and higher ride when in a sitting position.

Simply the very best bush crafting knife I have ever seen and/or owned! The tang is a 1/4 inch thick and the blade is razor sharp out of the box with no touch up needed. The micarta handles are green, which is my favorite color and fits my hand perfectly. The life time unconditional warranty is very ensuring. I have convinced myself to purchase another one. You can't beat the quality of this knife! Plus it comes wth a high quality Kydex sheath which holds the knife comfortably and securely. The sheath is equipped with a tension screw that you can adjust as to how the knife is retracted from the sheath. If you should desire, you can set the tension screw to where it will lock the knife in the sheath.

Most people looking to get this knife have probably researched it enough to know what they are getting. Excellence. The blade arrived on time with kydex sheath that has locking mechanism. Upon close inspection the knife is pretty much perfect. No defects and sharp enough to shave with but not too sharp. Just a touch up will make the blade razor sharp. The blade is thick and strong ready for most any field action as I'm sure most already know. The clincher for me is the lifetime fully transferable warantee. Totally worth it if you need real survival gear that you can trust. Outstanding quality and craftsmanship especially at this price.

One of the best knives I have, I use it as my daily carry but might be too heavy for some men these days, you know the type, they ask their wives permission to go play in the woods and some might even have their hair up in a bun and probably eating salads instead of meat, probably driving a prius or maybe checking in with the wife every few minutes or so, maybe even scared of getting dirty. So other than that it's a great knife, I have abused mine on purpose to test it and since I keep my own knives sharp enough to shave with it's no problem. Chop, slash, stab throw and even cut your pizza with it. Love this knife I have the Becker bk2 also and it's almost identical to the bk2, I have compared both on so many levels and it is my opinion that they are damn near the same, just a little different handle and coating and sheath but as far as the blade it's very similar, the point is maybe a little more sharp on the esee. The sheath is nicer on the esee as well and the sheath is adjustable about how tight it grips the knife. So if you like a lighter draw you can change the pull on it. The handle has a bearing block built in for a spindle and bow drill for fire starting and I have tested it and it does work, however maybe not so safe for idiots so idiots beware you know who you are. Probably already crying to mommy about my review. Just kidding... no I'm not. Love this knife though.

Very heavy duty knife , if your looking for knife that will take a beating this is it ! Came very sharp , shaving sharp !Sheath is very nice , would have given 5 stars but the handle is a little block for my medium sized hands . Spent a few minutes with the Dremel and some sand paper and pretty much perfect !

The knives came packaged nicely. Razor sharp right out of the box. Blade thickness was just right and the handle was comfortable and fit nicely with a great balance.

L esee 5 è senza dubbio alcuno ormai una leggenda nell ambito della sopravvivenza outdoor, bellissimo in questa versione verde foglia di ulivo... il colore è cangiante a seconda della luce, un un'effetto incredibilmente bello...!Massiccio e resistente è un coltello che può tranquillamente passare di generazione in generazione.L'acciaio 1095, a bassa legatura è temperato in modo eccellente, per un ottima tenuta del filo o micro bevel ed un ...altrettanto facile riaffilatura anche sul campo! La copertura, è ottima e previene l'ossidazione,basta aggiungere al filo del grasso di vaselina tecnica o dell olio tipo Balistol.Ottimo fodero in kidex, veramente ben fatto e totalmente castomizzabile, io gli ho aggiunto una tasca di sopravvivenza in cordura porta oggetti sempre della esee trovata sempre qui su Amazon da applicare alla parte anteriore del fodero in kidex, io adoro questo coltello!!!!

Coltello veramente eccezionale, un grande coltello ma al tempo stesso compatto e maneggevole.Per quanto riguarda il taglio si possono fare sia lavori di potenza, riesco a tagliare con facilità rami con un diametro di più 6 o7 cm insomma dei bei tronchetti, ma anche ottimo per tagli di precisione un vero coltello da lavoro massiccio e robusto.Molto soddisfatto dell'acquisto lo ricomprei ad occhi chiusi.
