Breaking Bread: Insurgent Black Intellectual Life

Great conversation
Need it to engage with in forthcoming book of mine. Great conversation. bell hooks clearly wanted to engage in a talking book with Paulo Freire. This never came to pass. We have this sustained series of conversations with Cornel West which must be one of the greatest intellectual exchange series of modern times. Pity that bell passed away two years ago. They would have discussed the genocide in Gaza and its ramifications for the present state of imperialism, settler colonialism and the current state of oppressor-oppressed relations. I know Cornel West made his views well heard and known on this and I concur. Great book.

Inspiring!
Not only is this book insightful and easy to read, it is a must have for young African Americans to get a since of the legacy passed on to us from those generations before us, and it provides somewhat of a blueprint of how we can make a difference in our own lives as well as the lives of those around us. bell hooks and Cornel West are invaluable leaders in the African American community and you don't have to be an intellectual to understand the importance of spirituality and equality in the life of African Americans as well as Whites and other minorities, which are exactly the values that they are putting forth in this text.

Excellent discussions, excellent criticism.
excellent book! A riveting history of black intellectuals with particular focus on underrepresented influential black intellectuals. An informative and enlightening read, would recommend to anyone interested in reading critical discussion "about the difficult necessity of moving beyond the academy to reach an audience in the black community at large" and insurgent influential black intellectuals.

This book is a treat for fans of either as well as for anyone who enjoys intelligent conversation. If you're missing that level of conversation post-graduation, (re)visit Breaking Bread.

Breaking Bread: Thought Provoking
Breaking bread, which is a collection of dialogues between African academicians Cornel West and bell hooks, is a wonderful example of the need for greater dialogue between the sexes and scholars of various disciplines throughout the academy. While this book doesn't examine any particular subject in depth, (I'd recommend the Cornel West Reader and several of hook's books for more insight into their respective philosophies) it is a pleasure to see academics openly discuss and struggle with sexism, heterosexism, and racism. This book is a wonderful introduction to these important figures in modern academia.
