The Best of Fado: Tesouro Portugues

We are headed to Portugal this summer for a family vacation, so I ordered this CD to develop an appreciation for the local culture. I knew nothing about Fado before we started planning this trip and what a revelation it has been to discover such beautiful, soulful music. I don't have the knowledge to compare this version to any other version of this musical genre, but I can tell you we have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. Listening to it, I can imagine sitting in a Lisboa cafe, sipping Port (or sherry?) and basking in the glow of Fado ballads performed live. It's a lovely soundtrack for an evening relaxing at home.

The songs are lovely and soulful - unique to Portugal. Fado is about fate, destiny, a longing for one's homeland when the sailors were at sea for so many months from the days gone by. Most musical accompaniment is with guitar, or a very, very light orchestra or wind instrument. Some of the songs are lively, but most are beautiful melodic yearnings - very peaceful to listen to, and impossible to compare o other types of folk music.

I first learned about fado music while traveling in Portugal. Listening to the CDs refreshes great memories of a wonderful trip.

I'm not knowledgeable about fado, but following a visit to Portugal I wanted to have some of the music.This disk turned out to be a good choice with a good variety of artists and styles. It's enjoyable without being too demanding on understanding or attention. I recommend it.The delivery was prompt and the disk was well packed. I would use this supplier again.

Enjoyable but sadly two tracks unplayable. Not worth the hassle of sending back - just skip the dead ones at this price
