You only need this block set!
These are a fantastic open ended block set. If you want just one set of blocks, buy these. In one play session my two year old and I built a basic block tower, houses for the people, a park with slides and a pond, a road for the cars and a side walk for the people, and we practiced letter recognition/sounds and making shapes (half and quarter circles into circles).Pros: there are SO many different ways to play with this and even I enjoy making the small town. It includes everything from people and cars to pictures of car washes, not to mention letters and numbers. While some of the pieces are small, they all pass the choking hazard test (I have a Safety First device, the whole item has to fit inside to be a hazard, none of these do). I still wouldn't WANT a baby playing with some of the smaller pieces, but that really just includes the numbers (so 10 pieces that I might remove if a baby was on the floor near these). These are durable. They get dumped out on our hardwood floors and occasionally thrown across the room (he's two, what do you expect) and I haven't seen any paint chipping like on most of our other wooden block sets. I also accidentally washed one of people with the laundry and it came out looking fine. And the cardboard carrying case is pretty rugged as well.Cons: the only thing that keeps this from being perfect is that due to the size/weight of the blocks, smaller toddlers will likely be knocking over their creations a lot (but there are plenty of ways for them to play with this without that frustration). Also using them on carpet may be difficult. We have a play rug and the people don't always want to stand up on it.

Great gift!
My 2.5 year old niece LOVES this. She isn't quite old enough to build the city, but she had a lot of fun playing with the blocks and racing the police car and ambulance around. The pieces all seem well made and the container it comes in is fairly sturdy so it should work well to store all the blocks when they aren't in use.

Vividly painted, intriguing wooden block set
Eight years ago I purchased the castle Hape block set for my eldest granddaughter. Her three little sisters have all used that set with immense enthusiasm. I found this City building wooden block set and I quickly ordered all of the other Hape sets I could find on Amazon. My Sweet Peas range in age from nine years to less than a year in age. These colorful blocks are a fabulous investment and an imaginative form of creative constructive play whether as parallel or isolated play. The miniature booklet depicts specific building examples. The Sweet Peas and their Grandfather love to construct an entire cityscape. Perhaps we'll develop a Urban City Planner with this fabulous building set.c

Great blocks for creative little minds
Great set of building blocks for little ones! It comes in a nice case, and the blocks are well organized. The pieces are sorted by type, which makes it easy to choose which pieces to take out and which to save for when your kids are a little older. Right now my 11 month old just enjoys banging the larger blocks together, but I see this set of blocks as one that will grow with him as he learn to play and build them in different ways as he grows!

These are great! A little small for my 18 month old just yet (he knocks them over constantly since they're not as chunky as what he's used to), but I believe that these will be used often as he gets older. Very nice quality blocks and bucket!!!

These building blocks are very nice. I love that they have the designs on them. They are definitely on the small side though for 12 month old babies. My son right away found one of the small circles and put right in his mouth so unfortunately right now he can't play with them. They will be perfect though when he's a bit older.

LOVE these blocks!
I originally bought these for my 2YO son but my 5YO daughter loves them even more. The blocks are really well made and allow for tons of creativity and hours of fun. The felt bottom is actually a puzzle which gets the ball going. Everything packs up so nicely into the bucket-style package and there is an insert that comes with the blocks that can give kids some ideas about what they can build. I'm a huge fan of Melissa and Doug products and I would put these right up there with them!

After agonizing over the perfect gift for my son's first birthday
After agonizing over the perfect gift for my son's first birthday, I chose this set. We have several other Hape toys that have been excellent additions to the toy chest - they're well made and engaging. All of our previous purchases have been made in Germany, as well. I am extremely disappointed to discover that this set is made in China. The product description is very misleading and I will be returning these.Buyer beware.

Hape-City Building

Definitely wood
Much better to step on than Lego blocks when your kid leaves them lying around on the carpet and you come downstairs in the middle of the night just to get a glass of water. I can confirm, these wood blocks are all wood. Some are even blocky in shape. They are definitely built to stand up to regular use as wood blocks.

Okay
Expected blocks to be larger and thus more versatile as kids grow.. a bit disappointed. Kids have really enjoyed but only twice since received a few months ago.
